New bike day!

Actually I picked it up yesterday.

1983 BMW r100rs. Original and unmolested Canadian bike with 46,000km, but shows a bit of age while being well kept. Original paint, and still has the manual, complete tool kit and roll and tire pump. Also came with side cases.

I've looked at a handful of them over the last couple years, and always walked away without any regret after they sold. This one is in such good condition and is so complete I knew it was the right one. It was a bit more money than some of the others, but it's probably better to buy the best example you can afford as opposed to someone else's failed/abandoned project like my formerly "great deal" but now expensive Norton Commando.

It's certifiable as it sits, but I expect the tires are past their due date so I'm going to take it to a shop to get the carbs rebuilt as I believe one of the floats is sticking, the coil checked/plug wires replaced as I don't think it's running 100% of the time on both cylinders, and obviously new tires and certification. I could do this stuff myself, but it's cold outside and when I take the cover off it in the spring I just want to go.

The seller told me he had one guy call who intended to turn it into a cafe racer, but he wasn't going to sell it to him and was glad I called.

I've wanted one since 1984.

Beautiful bike, always loved the look of an old r100

The code on the tires will tell you when they were made so they may be still usable.
Sounds to me like a minor check of spark plugs (gap), carbs and fresh gas & oils might be all that is needed.
I had a '78 R100/7 bought used in the mid 90's and ridden for a decade. One of the best of the "Airheads". Sold only when I decided to concentrate on the vintage bikes and needed the space.

Thanks Al. I intend to check the date on the tires since they are barely worn.

I will check the plug gaps as well since its so simple. Nice to have maintenance stuff easily accessible.

At 48,000 km on the odometer with "barely worn" tires, I would think that the tires are probably fairly recent replacements.

If you ever need expert help - show up with that at the Forks and look for Marty. He'll be riding similar with a sheepskin seat cover, a lot of stickers and 300+ km on it .....and a Windjammer on it.

I assume you mean I should seek him out for mechanical or practical input/ opinion as opposed to fashion advice.:)

Also, in some of your posts you refer to a magnetic tank bag that you like. Which one is it?

All available from BMW. Not body parts or luggage type stuff but for the most part better than lots of other makes.
One thing to keep on top of is to always double or triple check that the bags are properly latched on before you ride off.
Had a friend with a R90S with Krauser bags and that was his biggest peeve about his bike always made him nervous about loosing a bag.

Thanks, I've heard that before and will keep an eye. Never had an issue with my K100 but it had the later mounting brackets.

What a beauty!
My Krauser bags never opened up by themselves......so perhaps mine were an exception?
I always put my stuff in bags before going in the case, as they open down from the top....and contents will all fall straight out !!~!:LOL:
