Need to fix 2010 Harley Sportster 1200

I was out riding with my friend yesterday and he went down on a corner, he gave it gas and hit a patch of gravel and his bike went down on its left side. As a result of the crash, the left side foot peg dug into the silver plate on the crankcase, punching a hole into it. The handlebar and looks like the lever / perch dug into the gas tank, putting some nasty dents into it. He broke a tail light and a headlight. Very minor crash, he hurt his wrists going off and coming down but it was a slow speed tumble.

I'm just wondering if anyone here knows or can reccomend a good place to take a Harley for repairs, or someone who can fix gas tanks and such. I'm thinking the crankcase is a simple fix, looks like you can replace the metal plate where the hole was punched. The biggie is the gas tank, if he's able to get the dents repaired, he will have to customize his paint scheme on the bike and paint over the tank. Also he might just end up getting new levers and a new handlebar for the bike as well.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Bring it to Ted.

Why not just get all the replacement parts from HD? Bike is still worth some coin. You can get a new painted tank, or a whole new painted set of tins from dealer. What model is it? Nightster, Custom, '48???

Don't know about HD, but replacement tank for CBR is over 600 bucks. IMHO, there is a list of junk yards / parts dealers in the Dealers section. Start calling those guys and scavenging kijiji and ebay for that tank - you'll be able to get one for 1/4 or 1/3 of the original price.

I am glad your friend wasn't majorly hurt, bikes can be fixed, +1 on the junkyards / parts dealers suggestion. With a little patience you might find one and can have it painted to match the colour of the rest of that bike. Harley's are expensive that's why I don't have one :)

I see about 1K in damage. A paint-matched tank from dealer is $750. He's going to need to do a lot of scouring at parts-breakers to find the right sized tank for a fuel-injected sportster. If it's the wrong size the seat won't fit properly and a carbed tank is no good either. Plus, a repaint to get all the tins to match and the drop in re-sale because of that I don't think it's worth the hassle. I'd just find the dough for a new OEM tank at dealer or on e-Bay.

I don't want to start a flame fest here, but Ted is the LAST person i'd take it to after seeing his attention to detail first hand. Do a quick search on this forum.

OP, given the value of the bike, i would personally find a shop that specializes in Harleys and go from there.
Ace Moto tech does great work - Give him a shout (Adrian) - at the very least, he will point you in the correct direction if he cant do it himself.

I have a Sporty tank for sale. See if it may fit your friend's bike.

Thanks guys, lot of good info here. I'll pass it along, friend lives in Brampton. I don't know the name of the shop, but I know there's a Harley guy in Georgetown somewhere, I know it's West of Winston Churchill, and slightly north of Steeles on one of the side roads, I wonder if he's any good. Yah I was just assuming a brand new tank from HD would be $1000-1500. They are really small tanks though. RetroGrouch, I'll ask him about yours, looks clearn, he can always have it painted flat black or something.

Sportsters are one of the most popular bikes out there and Harley shops/mechanics seem to be a dime a dozen. They are one of the easiest bikes to get parts for.

OP, you can order most of what you need from J&P cycles in the US. They are the largest HD aftermarket parts retailer in North America. For exact HD parts I've had success getting used parts in excellent shape from Pooles in Hamilton and new parts in fast turnaround at a good price from Kitchener Harley.
They are very easy to work on, sort of agricultural in construction.
