Need some help with a CBR purchase

Hey guys,

Looking to finally get back on two wheels. I'm looking at pulling the trigger on a 2009 Honda CBR600rr w/25,000kms. A lot of tasteful mods done with name brand components. In 9/10 condition cosmetically, no signs of a drop at all...........$5,500

1) Do you guys consider this a high mileage bike? Is this a good deal?

2) The previous owner changed the sprockets. Went +4 in rear, -2 in front. Would this drastically affect ride quality? Would I need to change the sprockets back to stock? I don't do any stunting

Thanks for the help!

25K is not high in absolute terms but a lot depends on how it was ridden and maintained.

Sounds like the PO was a stunter and/or was big into wheelies. In 6th gear it'd be turning something like 8800RPM at 120kph with that gearing. I'd change them back. Carefully look at the frame, forks (esp. fork seals) etc for any signs of damage.

The 09 is stock 16 front 43 rear for sprockets
I run a -1+2 setup om my 09 and like it...wouldn't mind a +3 rear.
With a 14 front and 47 rear that thing should wheelie easily..check the fork seals.

The mileage on that buke is probably off because of the gearing unless they put in a speedo healer.

As for the mileage no that'd not high..and for price that's got to be the cheapest 07+ I've heard of that isn't a wreck

Some people are warning me that this bike shows signs of wheelies/stunting (the aggressive gear setup)

should this stop me entirely from purchasing this bike? How bad exactly are wheelies on a bike? I assume the front forks take a beating

the current owner claims he doesn't wheelie, but the previous owner who did all the work certainly might have. should I run the other way if there is sign of wheelies? I would have a mechanic look the bike over before I purchased

Personally I would walk away from that one...geared like that. I know you can change it back but the abuse it has seen, NO THANKS!

-2 +4 is an extreme gearing ratio. Even the 600's that run the shortest racetracks here rarely go that far. I would agree with others, a ratio like that would only be used by a stunter or someone who likes to ride on the highway at 12,000 rpm. If you remove the plastics you'll be able to have a good look underneath, although many stunters use crashbars which will protect the frame from direct damage, however it will still take impact force which could be hard to spot. Look for frame weakness/cracking around bends and welds, use a flashlight.

The motors are generally quite reliable although they require proper maintenance. I have 75,000 km on a track bike that still runs strong, but is well maintained. This is a bit of a generalization, typically stunt bikes are not the best cared for bikes. If you can't tell with the frame, look at the front forks. Ideally having them removed and testing them on a V-block with a run-out guage (they are inexpensive) will give you a picture of if the forks are straight or not. Its a simple test, but requires removing the forks. Its a little bit of work, but I'd insist on it. If that is too much effort, a dirty way is to simply remove the front wheel and spin each fork leg around 180 degrees, one at a time and re-insert the axle. It will be hard to get the axle to mate if the fork is bent. This is a really rough way to do it, but may give you clues to abuse.

Check the fork seals. Move the bike forward several times and hit the brakes, let the seal run up and down the fork tube a few times, is there a build up of fluid on the fork?

Ask the seller when was the coolant last changed? When was the last time the forks were taken apart and cleaned? What oil do they use and why? While the numeric answers themselves are irrelevant, alack of answers or "story" by a seller will tell you how well they understand the bike.

You never really know the history of a bike, but maintenance/repair can quickly surpass any "savings" on a good deal. Not saying you'll have issues, they are fairly well built, but I'd be wary of buying it.

Oh no, someone wheelied their motorcycle! What a horrible thing.... :lmao: My R6 with 67,000 km has done like 5000+ wheelies.... No damage whatsoever because I brought it down nice and softly. Maybe the gearing was changed for acceleration, which is more useful than top speed? I geared my R6 15/51 (stock is 16/48 ), so I'd have more usable power. Top speed was 222 KM/H, but the acceleration was increased. Who needs to do 260-270? Not nessesary, when you can out accelerate anything on the road.

Note to self: Never buy a used motorcycle from Matthew Tremayne :)

Impressive. Over 5000 perfect wheelies without ever coming down hard. Very impressive.

I've geared bikes for more acceleration and better wheelies as I'm sure most sport riders have done at some point. But you know what's even easier? Buy a more powerful bike. More acceleration, easier wheelies, AND a nice relaxed cruising rpm on the highway. It's like magic!

it's always the previous owner that did stuff - every owner i've spoken to rode like angels and knew nothing about mods. :/
