N.S. trip advice

I've got 2 weeks off in August during which time I want to do some touring. A gf of mine who really wants to come with me only has 8 days. I want to ride out to the Cabot Trail, ride the Trail counterclockwise and clockwise and ride back. I was also hoping to spend a day in Montreal. But it seems to me that 8 days is pushing it and I would be rushing the whole time. I'd like some input from those of you who have done this as to whether or not 8 days would be a bit nuts.

Hey Palm, my wife (Azia) and I just got back from a two week trip out east. If you take a direct route straight to the trail then 8 days is plenty. If you want to take your time around all of N.S. then you are definitely pushing it with 8 days. The Cabot trail will take you about 4 hours to ride (maybe 5 I can't exactly remember) so theoretically you could do it both ways in the day, but that might get exhausting. Feel free to PM me for more specific advise, everything is so fresh in my mind that I could write too many paragraphs on here.

It took us a good 7hrs to ride. That includes stops to take pics and admire the scenery.

4hrs is possible, but if you are not stopping except for gas. Are u going to ride all the way there and not stop to admire the scenery??

A couple of days to get there - a couple of days on the trail and three days to get back - plus one for bad weather - no problem -
Go to Meat Cove and take a whale watching ride for sure.
Have a bite at the little restaurant where the main road cuts off to Meat Cove - good food and an interesting 10 minute museum in the back.

Have a french pastry in Cheticamp

I lived in Nova Scotia for 7 years, man i miss it sometimes. I never owned a motorcycle when I was there. I definitely want to do a trip out there.

yeah - been a long time since I've been and never on a bike - for sure on the to do list. Love it.

8 days is plenty of time ... I would recommend setting aside at least one day for the Cabot Trail & area. There's a bunch of places to stay at the base of the road. I wouldn't do Montreal in the same trip, though, then that would be pushing it.

I'm born and raised down there. Be sure to check out the highlands national park at the top of the trail.
Other places to see which are pretty amazing is peggy's cove and the fortress of louisberg.

Personally, I think 4 days down there is pretty tight. There is TONS you are going to miss out on with such a short trip.

What he said.

Check out the York Redoubt Battery too as well as Lunenburg. The fisheries and oceans museum is cool and you can see the Bluenose.

Got back from the Cabot trail a week ago. Personally I think the scenery is too nice to rush and ride around twice in one day. Also I was told not to go on the trail before about 10 am as there could be significant fog in early am. We got started at 9 am and had no weather issues, but with stops for pics and lunch it took around 6 hours. Traffic was virtually non-existant before 11 am but we decided to do the trail on a Friday. Probably much busier on w/e.If you get a chance Peggys Cove and riding around the southern shore - Chester/Lunenberg etc is great as well.

I'll meet you in the middle and say 5.5 hours.

BTW, MacDoc makes a good point. You should be fully ready to alter your schedule due to bad weather, there is no point in riding the trail during a heavy rainstorm, and that is a very likely scenario, so be prepared to sit in a hotel room for a day in order to get nice weather for the trail.

There's a saying "if you don't like the weather in Cape Breton, wait 5 mins"
In July and August, I would say good weather will be more than bad weather. You will get the torrential downpour, but the sun will come out

I just did this trip a couple of weeks ago. Took my time, arrived on the cabot trail on the 4th day. Had an unplanned event and made it home on the 5th day, but if I had another 3 days it would have been easy
