it's a little overdue but if you want to read my adventures check out my blog here

I managed to kill about 5000km in 10 days. this was my general route theres probably at least 200-400km unaccounted for of me randomly going off this path:

Would have been about 6500 but due to a chain failure I was stuck in Halifax for a day and lost out on touring PEI. No problems Halifax is an amazing city. Cape Breton is so random with the weather. you can be in full cloud cover, drive 20km and be in the clear blue sky. here's my photo album:

here's some of my favourite pics of the trip:

There's well over 100 more pics I took ranging from the Keith's brewery to old quebec city etc. I also took a few hours of gopro footage of my going around the cabot and some of upstate New York. NY was a great place to rip around. such a low population and miles upon miles of twistie roads.
For animals I saw moose, deer, wild turkey, lots and lots of crows/chipmunks. I almost hit a turkey and deer crossing the road, it was awesome :p
Not mentioned is how I goofed up on one turn on the cabot. I think it was a decreasing radius and I fixated on the other side of the road. Didn't dump the bike! held onto it and came to a stop across the road on the dirt shoulder...However, Leaving cheticamp I had parked on the wrong side of a hill and as I was swinging my short legs over the bike it was a bit much and I gently layed the bike down:redface:

Costs I anticipated about $2000 for the whole trip which was bang on. It ended up being around $2500 though for having to get my chain/sprockets replaced. The guys at procycle in Halifax were A++++ in getting me back on the road again within 24H of me stopping there having to order me a rear sprocket and getting it next day shipped.

I found that doing it alone despite what so many people said about how I should do it with someone else. The simple fact is being able to do what you want, when you want, how you want is the best feeling ever. There was no better way to take this trip and nothing I would have changed(aside from the fact that I had to come back). Staying at hostels was the best meeting all travellers from all over the world kept me from being lonely.
Also, any road that has the word "trail" in it is almost always worth taking.
Cabot trail, Ceileidh trail, sunrise trail, Fundy Trail(which unfortunately I didn't have time to do but seeing it on a map it looks amazing and full of twisties

Thats all I have now. Once I get some of the videos edited I'll upload. Enjoy :)

Great photos. I did Victoria this summer and hope to follow your tracks next summer, with a tour of Newfoundland added.

Great photos....I leave on Thursday for the Cabot trail and if I wasn't excited already this may have put me over the edge

what route are you taking?

If you want a nice route off the highway take the sunrise trail from new glassgow to antigonish, then the ceileidh trail(highway 11 or 19) from the canso causeway up the southwestern coast of cape breton to the cabot just 30 minutes from cheticamp.

Also, if you are making a detour to st. john go through Fundy national park and find your way to the Fundy trail. I wasn't able to do it but from what other people had told me in Moncton was that it was an amazing scenic/twisty route to St. John :)

Enjoy the trip though it's a life changer

I just got back from the same trip. Awsome. We also took the sunrise trail into New Glasgow after the "Cabot".It's a 2 lane road with no cars. We rode around 100-120km/h along the Sunrise in spots and loved it. We also went down to Alma and stayed there for the night. Its right on the Bay of Fundy. Took Fundy N.P. over to Bangor and the park was like a rollercoaster. The Cabot was overcast and FOGGY at the top but other then that we had no rain for 10 days. The best part of the Trip was coming down into all the little towns along the coast in Gaspe. Top 5 rides I have been on for sure. The Cabot is a little overrated after you do it once, but until then its a major ride destination for anyone with a bike.
Your Pictures look good, I also took a couple GoPros along and have about 10 hours of video to look thru. So far there hast been a bad shot.

I came back from the trail yesterday. Overrated? I guess different people have different expectations...I found it to live up to its name and then some, absolutely amazing, it should be on everyone's bucket list...

I did the trail twice, once where I stopped at all lookout points, enjoyed the views, took photos, and then I turned back and didn't stop at all, ripped through the twisties. My chicken strips are much thinner now.

Wow! That's awesome! This is exactly what I want to do either this season or next.

Dsquintz, have you done many multi-day road trips before? Or, was this your first? I haven't done any multi-days before and was wondering how best to prepare for a long trip such as yours.

haha I'll be completely honest before this trip my LONGEST ride was about 400km from hamilton to niagara and then along lake erie to port dover and back. But I'm the "jump in with both feet" kind of person. I knew I was able to make those longer days riding with relative ease. The cramping in the inner thigh/*** really gets to you after a couple hours so you really need to make use of your gas/food breaks to walk it off and stretch out all the "kinks". It also helps that my bike is classified as a sport tourer so it's not as aggresive a riding position like a R6 or GSXR.

The only advice I can really give is to really do your homework on yourself and what YOU can handle day to day. My uncle gave me a book for christmas I read twice called "The Motorcycle Touring Bible" it gives the lowdown on EVERYTHING from describing different style bikes to the authors top picks for destination rides(I beleive Cabot is one of them) to what to pack on your trip.

I think it was in the book. But basically what it said is that After the first 2-3 days of riding most riders will have that distance cut down by about 60-70%. so if you slab out 1000km on day 1 and 2. chances are you will only be able to do 600-700 the next few days. Fatigue kicks your ***.

Theres a ton of great info on this website as well as ADVrider(which I didn't really look on but it helped alot when making a tool list). Check out wheelieboy's blog on his trip to Cali last year, it was a huge help for me in giving me the drive to plan the trip and some great insight on packing...mainly to never pack a tent/sleeping bag :p

Dont get me wrong I loved riding the Cabot Trail, but As I stated by the whole sentence " Overrated After you do it once". For the Length of time to get out there( 2+ days), the Really good parts of the 298k/m total might equal 75-100k/m. I can find 100k/m of good roads alot closer but its all about the destination. But as I also said those 100k/m were "Awsome" If you have not done it it is a MUST. I found hwy 138 into La Malbaie, hwy 155 into La Tuque, Hwy 132 around Gaspe, Hwy 114 thru Fundy Nation Park, 9N into lake placid, Hwy 3 from Lake Placid-WaterTown, (all on this trip) to be just as nice as The Cabot. I also took over 500 pictures and at least 10 hours of video on this trip as there were some truly amazing sites. I do 2-3 large trips (10+ days, 5000-13,000k/m per trip) a year so I have seen some "sights" and the Cabot did live up to my expectations, Its just not a trip I see myself doing year after year. Maybe every 5-10 years.

Thanks, Dsquintz, for the info! :) I'll definitely check out those links and ADVrider, and I've already put the Touring Bible book on hold at the library. Guess I'll plan my trip over the off season and head out next spring/summer.

Don't do Cabot before July - weather is very iffy and it can get bloody cold and miserable.
Same applies to Gaspe

If you are doing down east in spring the Annapolis Valley warms at about the same rate as S Ontario and of course the US route is fine then as well.

Two friends and I did the same trip last 2 weeks of June! Crossed @ Cornwall, went across to Lake Champlain and down between the lakes on 2 and followed 2 across to Bangor Maine, then across hwy 9 to NB. Had to go through Hopewell Rocks--a must see! From there we went across the bridge to PEI, rode around there and crossed to NS on the ferry. Straight to Cabot trail from there, spent a few day riding around the trail and taking lots of pictures and movies. One of the guys, Frank, is great with photo and movies, here is the address of our video for the trip.---- enjoy http://www.viddler.com/v/fd5949b5
