My New Work Vehicle.....

Well, piano tuning season has started again. I generally take the summer off (tough, I know, but someone's gotta do it..). I service the GTA and as far as Niagara Falls. I packed my tools in the saddlebags and hit the road. Three out of town service calls and 350 kms later (over the last two days), there is no better way to make a living and enjoy my passion at the same time. Freaks the old ladies out a bit when I rumble into the driveway though. After my last tuning in Flamborough I rode up to Fergus for lunch and back home through the back roads. Gawd, I love riding.... (and pianos)

hope you don't tune by ear!

Actually, yes, I do. It was a two year programme at George Brown College. I put in over 1500 hours of practice during that time to get that "sweet" sound from a piano. It has been a great gig so far. I have done concert tunings for Leahy, Holly Cole,Tommy Hunter, Diana Krall over the years just to name a few. Tuned at the Skydome a few times for people I can't remember now. Also tuned for some nasty prima donna's that I won't mention. There was one that swore one note just "wasn't right", when I knew it was fine.. I raised it, lowered it, then put it right back where it was before and asked how it was now.. Perfect!, she said. Some performers just like to throw their weight around....

awesome man. I just meant with riding a bike to do a tuning, could make it a bit harder is all, not that you wouldn't have the skill set!

Sweet gig and bike. Since your ears are your livelihood I hope you are protecting them when you ride.

We once had a piano for our kids and had it tuned, the tuner was blind. I had heard many were blind, is this a misconception, obviously your not. Curious.

So as I can see I'm not the only piano tuner on 2 wheels.Working for Paul Hahn & Co in Toronto.

We had a poll in my 300 member facebook group ride group once. For employment there were an off number of computer/it related people, and PIANO TUNERS! lol. For hobbies GUNS were the most common. Must be something to that...

Yes, I wear earplugs when i ride, but a lot of the damage has already been done. In my early days, I would do about 20 tunings a week with the average tuning taking about 45 minutes. Most pianos are above 90db when you are tuning as you have to strike the keys very hard to get the string to "settle" in position. A lot of the big concert grands are over 100db when being tuned or played hard so it's kind of an occupational hazard. I am also a gigging musician (have been for 20+years) so loud rock (and jazz) has taken it's toll. Before pianos I was a flight instructor out of Hamilton. I have almost 3000 hours of flying time, most without earplugs(young and invincible, and stupid).Tuning poses no problems thus far because I/we listen for very distinct sounds which are easy to hear once you know what to listen for. I find myself saying "pardon?" a lot more in restaurants or crowded places where there is a lot of background noise, but it works out ok when my wife asks me to do something.. "sorry, honey, didn't hear you...."

i should have you give me an estimate to get my parents upright piano back in tune...but have been told something about replacing a sound board and so forth in the past...do some people that don't get used, just fall apart and end up costing more to fix?
