Moving from Yamaha FZ6 to Suzi GSXR750 too big of a step?

I'm a relatively new rider, I've put about 10,000km on my beloved 2005 Yamaha FZ6 (in just a few months), which is my first street bike anyway. Now that insurance premiums will lower soon for me in regards to a SS and will be more in reach for me, I've been thinking about stepping up. Perhaps sometime mid-season or so, so I'm looking into putting 3-4 thousand km on my FZ6 in addition to the 10k I've already done before I change the bike.

I've been eyeing the Suzuki GSXR750, I guess 2003+ models, though I'd hope to get my hands on a 2006+. These beasts output much much more power to the rear than my FZ6, although it is a pretty fast machine too (same engine as the old R6).

Do you think with my experience it would be unwise to make the change?

Absolutely not "too big of a step". The 750 is relatively docile but it'll be a big upgrade in power from the FZ6. Good choice.

I don't understand why people are so paranoid.
Yes, the GSX-R is a more powerful machine than your FZ, but it's a motorcycle nonetheless.
I started riding on a GSX-R 750 (2006) and I've had no mishaps whatsoever.
Prior to that, I had no riding experience (other than 2 days on a DR200 at M1X course).
You have the same chance of crashing a 125 as a 600 as a 750 if you ride like a hooligan.
Respect the bike, respect the road and you'll be just fine.
It's all rider IMO.

I started riding on a 2011 GSX-R750. I will admit to being somewhat older than 19 (as in "way" older) when I made the decision to start riding. I'm still a newb with only 3000 km under my belt. I was well aware of the prevailing attitudes toward no SS as a first bike, and they do have merit, especially for younger more impetuous souls. As most experienced riders will tell you, the margin for error recovery is very small on these bikes. So far, no squeeky-bum moments.....I'm not going to say there never will be any, but a mature attitude goes a long way to ensure your continued vitality on this planet.

The throttle goes both ways, like mentioned, respect the bike and the road, you'll be fine.

LOL im going down to a 750 from a 1000..

Like everyone else says its all about your attitude. I started on a 600 and respected the throttle/brakes.. That jump won't bother you at all, but you will notice a difference.

I work with a guy who looks like he'd have a hard time going up more than 1 flight of stairs without taking a break. He just knows everything about everything and I'd bet my last dollar that he's ever played a sport in his life. This guy decided the other day that he might just 'pick up a ducati'. These are the people that have problems because they don't respect the bike. By you even asking the question it shows that you full understand the respect necessary and I'm sure you won't have a problem at al. I say pull the trigger!!

Buying a new or used 750?

Used.. but new-ish.. I love the 07 model years and up, so anything from 2007-2011.. not too much different between them.. looking to buy before the start of warmer weather too..

Fair number of changes for 2011....8kg weight loss, Showa Big Piston Forks and shock, Brembos.

Thanks everyone for your replies! You all reconfirmed my initial personal opinion, so I'm glad :)

I don't have much liquid assets right now, but still---what year is the one you want to sell, what mileage?

Not sure if I really want to sell it, I'm just playing with the idea at this point.
Even if I get a Duc. I'll probably still keep the 7-five-0...
Anyways, PM sent with all the details.
:sad5:

Yeah its true some good changes, but honestly finding a decent bike from just a year ago used is hard, and even then they over price them to the point where I would just buy new. I am looking for a bike in the range of 7k-9k tops with mods etc..

So realistically I think I will end up getting a 08, 09 no problem, but the 10, 11's maybe in a few years..

So the 8KG, I could probably lose myself.. lol...
