Motorcycle Safety

Sorry for the question I'm just a little unsure. I just purchased a used 2013 Triumph very low km and was wondering if I need to have a safety before I register the bike with ministry?

Reason I ask is the the bike is only three months old.

If required what's the most reasonable priced place to go? Canadian Tire?

Thanks

Cool! I would probably bring it to a place that deals with bikes specifically; perhaps GP bikes? They can take a look at it and tell you if there is anything wrong with it; you can also ask the mechanic if there is anything that you should fix.

I think it is all the same price for safety...

What bike did you get?

If you're buying a used vehicle, you have to get the safety certificate to register it as fit and get plates.

The cost of a safety inspection can vary a little, but you shouldn't find a major difference in the price. On that note, the one time I got a safety at Canadian Tire cost the most (about $10 more than the others).

Thanks gents.

Almost certain you can register the bike as 'unfit' without a safety. To get a plate & sticker, however, you'll need insurance and safety certificate.

Can I transfer the plate and sticker from my previous bike?

Close, but not quite.

If the previous owner had the vehicle registered as FIT, you CAN get plates without a safety certificate. Go to a service ontario location and bring the signed ownership and proof of insurance on the vehicle. They will transfer the vehicle to your name, provide you a license plate and give a sticker for the plate with a big red T on it. That's your ten day permit. You will need to get your safety to get a normal sticker.

That's what I did when I bought my bike - I paid the previous owner and got the ownership one day, the next day I went to my broker and had her set up a policy starting that very same day. She gave me the insurance pink slip and from there I went to a service ontario place and got a place and a 10 day sticker. Drove to the previous owner's house, put the plates on the bike and rode it home. The next day I rode it to the shop for the safety - saved me the trouble and expense of having to get it towed to the shop.
