so after stressing about which bike to get as my first and cannot decide between cbr 125 or gs500f. i decided to go with cbr because its cheaper and cheap insruance. im in love with gs500f but can afford the insurance right now so i read a lot about both bikes and advice from here and there i finally decided to get the cbr 125 i found a bike that im going to check tomorrow. the seller said that the bike is certified and plated and if i like the bike all i have to do is transfer the bike and plates to my name. he even offered me to test drive it. sorry for this long msg anyways i want to know is it possible for him to transfer the bike under my name and what are the steps i need to take for the bike to be fully mine.

im getting my m1 this week and will do the m2 course early july or end june then insure the bike and start riding.

please advice me on the steps to take after i like the bike and decide to buy it.
ps i read the step to step guide but not sure if its the same for me since the bike is certified and plated already

You go to the mto. You pay tax and get your own plates. Plates are not transferable. You buy new ones, and the old owner can transfer the existing plates to a new bike or return them for a pro-rated refund. But you need brand spankin' new plates.

ok thanks i dont know why the seller told me he will tell me how to transfer it to me. but i guess i will just tell him to give me the certification and all so i can get new plates

Well if he has a current safety than that helps because in order to get new plates you need:
Safety
Signed ownership
Proof of insurance
UVIP
$$ for HST
$$ for plates and sticker

If the seller can't give you a safety you can get a 10 day temp plate for $15. Use that to ride it to a mechanic and get it safetied and then go back to the mto and get real plates.

OP - keep in mind the safety (certified) is only good for 36 days. Getting your license/insurance/plates promptly would save you some trailer/hauling hassle.

how much does it cost to get plates?

Ya that's ok because I was looking on Mto and prices were 245 or so but that was personalized. I just met the seller the bike looked good I didn't test drive it because I didn't have my helmet but he drove the bike to where I am to check it and he said he will get me the uvip package and safety certificate then driving to my place with his plates so I don't have to tow it or anything

Is the bike still insured? If you're riding with someone else's plates than don't do the ownership transfer until after you get it to where it's going, and make damn sure that it's insured.

The bike is insured so when he drives the bike to my plates he will have his plates and insurance on it. He will give me all the papers and then I will go get my own plates and insurance.
Once he gives me the uvip package and certificate then all I do is get the insurance and plates

Okay, so he's delivering it to you? I thought you were picking it up with his plates on it. That's a much better plan than what I thought

Ya he is delivering it so I don't have to wait to get the plates or pay someone to transfer it to my place. The uvip package is ownership transfer too? He is on his way to the Ontario service office to get it all

UVIP is seller's responsibility and it's only $20. Make sure to check it out (no liens on the bike, ownership info) before he signs over the ownership. Sounds like a good seller (doing UVIP, safety, delivering the bike).

Ya he is a really nice guy. How do I check the bike has no liens on it? Sorry im a new rider and never bought a used bike or vehicle before. I know about checking that the bike is good to be on the road from the safety certificate

Thanks great links these should be in the new riders forum so beginners like me will know too. Without this website and the great helpful riders on here I would've been so lost and didn't know what to buy or look for in a used bike :)
