Motorcycle died

Hi
I havent been on here for a very long time. However last time you guys helped out a lot.

I was riding my 2004 shadow 750 this am when I noticed the speedometer was fluctuating, then it started to back fire and i was unable to maintain a constant speed. I pulled over and then restarted and continued to the nearest convenience store. Those symptoms continued. I tried putting gas in (hoping)nothing. I tried to restart and it wouldnt turn over. The battery was dead. So I had it towed to a Honda shop.

I replaced the battery last year and left on trickle charger over the winter. have had no issues up to this am.

I havent heard back however I know very little and dont want to be ripped off. I figure something electrical, have been told when it was dropped off possible related to something (forget the name of it) related to maintaining battery charge. They figure my battery was being drained and thus all the symptoms.

any ideas?

My guess is the regulator/rectifier. When mine died in 2007 it was just under $200 fromt the dealer. I think yours will be less. ($68 US for 31600-HN5-671 at cheapcycleparts.com)

you need to check your charging system. stator output should be about 20vac at idle and 80vac at 5000 rpm. test your rec/reg with an ohm meter, and if possible have your battery load tested. the cdi needs a least 9 volts to work.

Besides the charging system, you should check your spark plugs as well.

Back fire means unburn gas that got pumped out to the exhaust header and continue to burn off or partialy burn off while going through the cat converter, it's very bad for the cat if your bike has one.

Check the spark plugs and make sure they are in good condition, sounds like you have lots misfire which leads to backfire; you can also confirm this with the exhuast fumes smelling close to raw gasoline.

As with the Battery, depending on the capacity, normal fully charged bike battery will not last 10 crank attempts anyways, so it may not be the problem consider you never had a drained battery this season so far.

If dealer wants too much money for repair, just walk away, pay them for the diagnos which shouldn't be more than half hour of labour.

Thanks for the input. That was what he mentioned when I dropped off- regulator. I am still waiting to hear back since dropping it off. Will keep yous posted.
