Motor swap - gsxr750 - WRECKER SUGGESTIONS?

Hi guys,

Can anyone recommend a decent source for a 98 gsxr750 motor? It's for my track bike... I'm considering replacing the motor and I don't wanna risk dealing with 'known to be shady' places.

Any suggestions? I live in Fergus, so I'm going to call up Zdeno's... but I would like some other options. Western GTA would be ok too.

Thanks a lot. Hope the winter is short!

if you don't want to risk 'dealing with shady', you can't put zdeno's in the same sentence. We did a motorswap on a SV1000 with a motor from zdenos for a buddy, it was missing the oil pump gear, the stator (but cover was there). Al was a ********* to my buddy about it and kept just saying "sold as is". Basically exactly what you'd expect from them. So if you buy a motor check it carefully, make sure your not missing a clutch, stator, oil gear, etc.

On older bikes, I would consider any purchased engine that you haven't been able to hear that very same engine running, to be a "core" for a rebuild.

On every older engine that I've dealt with in these circumstances (and there have been three or four), it has been a good thing that we pulled it apart and had a look around inside. On the one case where I bought a used engine and put it in my race bike without a teardown, it spun a rod bearing because the oil pump wasn't properly tightened to the cases.

If the engine that you have in the bike now is "known good", might as well just keep running it. If it has known issues, might as well just fix them. Better the devil you know, in a situation like this.

Ok, thanks for taking the time to tell me!
That would be a kick in the *** to find out after.
The reason I was going to swap was to avoid doing engine work... maybe I should consider just doing the head gasket... Wish I knew how to tell if it was just the gasket or if more is wrong...

If it might just be a head gasket, you'd be way ahead to rebuild it. Tear it down, get the head, valves, guides and springs checked out, decide whether to re-ring it or not, flip it over and change the oil pump. Then you'll have a 100% known entity. Engine swaps would be good if a rod is through the case - diagnosis for that issue is pretty easy. Oh yes, probably a cam chain tensioner would be good too. Talk to Frekeguy, he's probably looking for a project.

Hey, thanks! I appreciate the guidance. I will contact this Frekeguy...

One more thing... which I suspect Frekeguy might be able to answer: Do you guys know of any good (ie., trustworthy) home mechanics that would want to do a rebuild for cash? I was considering spending somewhere around a grand to swap motors, so maybe I could get someone to do the work for me.

I just don't have 'bulk' time to put into anything right now. I have a 4yo and my wife is due with second in a month... I just don't see much time available this spring and I want to have my track pig ready to go for june-ish.

Again, thanks!
