Morning Commute...

I don't normally rant..but..there I am driving on the 401 below the airport this morning..7:45am..the place is a skating rink. Hardly any snow..whatever was on the ground had been run over a few times and quickly became just ice. Traffic is slow..understandably..4 cars in the guardrail.. They forecasted this snow for 3 days..would it kill MTO to send out a salter at 5am to prep the highway a bit??? Get off the highway onto Mississauga roads..already salted.. Brutal.

I was surprised I could've open my car door this morning. Normally when it rains then freezes, I have to wrestle my car door to get it open

The snow plow, salt and sand operations are now being done by private contractors........oh wait, they can do it cheaper and better than the MTO gravy train.

Check to see who does it for Suaga......

And how is Toronto City Hall to blame for this?

Did I say anything about Toronto City Hall?

MTO is Ministry of Transportation of Ontario or does the gravy train only ocourr in Toronto.

The MTO privatized the snow plow operations becasue the private sector is suppose to do it cheaper and better.....

Yeah, for sure they didn't want to pay extra for overtime or something to go out before 7am.. I wonder what the cost of the 600 accidents is..

I wonder how many accidents would be there when they go on strike??

Remember, even when it is private contractors, there can be strikes, look at York Region and VIVA commutter buses. All I am trying to point out is that everyone want everything to be done as cheaply as possible as long as it does nt effect them. Back a while ago, everyone complained the the MTO maintenance operations where too expensive, so they went through and privatized and now if they are not out there, who do we blame now?

Road were horrible this morning, took me 1.5 hours to come to work this morning which is usually a 15 minute drive.
Didn't see any plows on the road either.

better driver training?

Yeah, but it would have still been needlessly slow..seriously, 1 pass with a salt truck would have prevented that entire episode. 100,000 people go by there in the morning rush..that's an awful lot of needlessly delayed people to save a few thousand bucks in overtime..

leave earlier? (I get you point and do agree but there are other things that also come into play)

Actually, my commute really wasn't bad. I was at work on time..but that was more luck than anything because most of the spin-outs were in the express or at the crossover at that point. It's just the principle more than anything.. Yeah, there are lots of self-absorbed, idiot, impatient drivers that exacerbate the situation..but all it would take is a 3 hour lead-time prep that would solve the problem. They brag in the press about how they're ready for winter, people on stand-by blahblahblah..they sure inconvenienced a lot of people for very little reason in my opinion.

Just because it's privatized doesn't mean they call the shots. MTO still pays the bills and this was most likely a failure on their part.

IF 'we' call the shots, why is the private contractor VIVA still on strike??

These bids are placed to provide a minimum service, you want more, you have to pay more.

Everyone wakes up and expects the roads to be clean no matter what...

I'm one of those so called private contractors and here in the waterloo area the snow came to late to do anything about it.. they won't go and plow during rush hour and back everything up with hazards of causing accidents..

We usually go out between 11pm and 3am, if there is no major snow by then, it will wait untill the next night while salter's go out and spread salt on major routes..

People really just need to leave early to get to work when it's crappy out.. also slow down...

what a reversal....my commute in this morning was shorter than normal coming in from north down 400 to Concord. Barely any snow, nothing on the ground. G/F calls me to see if i got into work this morning okay..."huh? yea, why do u ask?"

She tells me south of hwy7 is a disaster. Co-worker coming from QEW/427 took 2 hours to get to work...

Well, just FYI, whoever was supposed to be doing the 401 in Toronto did a **** job today.. The parking lots were salted and wet, the city roads were salted and wet..how can MTO not get that right?? Useless..

I was *leaving* work this morning at 7am and the 'sauga roads were pretty decent and salted. Sucks for the rest of you guys.

People STILL can't drive though. "Oh noes! Snow!!"
