so im going to montreal for the first time evvaaa! im going with a few friends for fun and we have all never been there.. any suggestions/ recommendations or must visit places ?

i was also looking at places to stay.. i tried googling a short term furnished apartments for rent thinking it might b cheaper than a hotel but i cant seem to find anything.. anyone know anything ?
thank you =)

I am from there, and also I was there a couple weeks ago.

Expect MAJOR traffic anywhere downtown and in the surrounding areas.
Apparently doing contruction/maintenance/renovations is most efficient when you do it all at once...EVERYWHERE.

I'm not kidding. I grew up there and am used to the horrible roads and traffic, but when I was there a couple weeks ago it was completely ridiculous.

For fun and things to do, spend a night on Rue Sainte-Catherine.
Start at one end in the afternoon and work your way down the street. A ton of stuff to see and do especially on weekends.
Le Vieux-Port (Old Port) is also a great place to see and hang out on weekends. Tons of street performers and little shops, pubs, etc.
My favorite thing to do at Old Port is "Le Labyrinthe du Hangar 16" (huge maze, changes every week or so). Especially if you're going with friends, this could be a real hoot after having a few pints.

Bring brown bags with holes cut out for the eyes, and mouth, as their girls can be competitively ugly.

What part of Montreal did you go to? The girls there are definitely better than Toronto (both looks-wise and in terms of personality) edit: hahaha I just took in that you said "competitively ugly"

+1 for rue St. Catherine. The hotel we stayed at the "Le Cantlie suites". Clean hotel, decent prices, + under a 10 minute walk from the clubbing strip/shopping strip/bar strip. If you're on a bit of a budget, wednesdays are 2.50 drink days at Winnie's. Surprisingly, for a cheap drinks night, the crowd isn't too bad.

Only thing I'd worry about is that I hear STDs are getting worse there (sorry to be a bit of a buzzkill). Just be careful, I guess. Haha btw, if you're taking your bike, you're gonna have the time of your life posing there. Think Brunny's, but every single night.

My home town!

Super Sexe is a MUST. ;)

If you appreciate a good smoked meat sandwich, Schwarts on St. Laurent is also a must. In fact, if you've never been, you should go just so you can say you have been.

The old city is really nice. a few decent restraurants down there, but it's very touristy. If you want something incredibly fun to do, check out Saute Moutons. They take you out in a big jet boat through the lachine rapids. lots of fun. If you want something that doesnt take as long and costs less, there's another jet boat that just takes your around the st lawrence doing spins and stuff. also fun.

I would normally tell people to stay away from Cresent St.. filled with uber lame bars/clubs, lots of youngins from the states and straight edged peeps. But then again, that might be your thing, if it is, check it out. Lots of good food on st laurent and some okay lounges. Also some good hipster spots up on the plateau.

Time super club on St Jacques is a good time.

If you want to keep the party going late night, Stereo is a dope afterhours. Mixed crowd though. Another decent afterhours is Circus. No booze, party doesnt' get going until about 3am and goes until anywhere from 10am-noon or later depending on the DJ.

If you're in town on Sunday, Mount Royal Park for the Tam Tams is def a must for someone that has never been. It's basically a massive drum circle. I've been there and seen thousands of people in multiple circles on nice days.

Sunday afternoon.. Piknik Electronik is also amazing. HUGE outdoor party on the water, and free! Booze is served. Guest international DJs. on nice days there are thousands of people there.

The Foufounes Electriques' patio on Ste-Catherine is also a must. I heard it's not as it used to be, but still a decent spot.

If you go to Circus, watch out,.....if you keep walking down same street you'll end up smack in the middle of gay town. YOu have been warned. lol

What if thats his thing??

I've been almost every year for the Jazz festival or Pride. As mentioned, the smoked meat at Shwartz's is tops. I used to buy several pounds to bring home with me. Amir's is good middle eastern food. - cheap. They also have some 49c and 99c pizza joints. Rue St. Catherine is a nice walk during the day and rue St. Laurent is nice at night. Stereo is an interesting Saturday night.

A big +1 to the TamTams on Sundays at Mont Royal. Close by on rue Saint Urbain is a great sandwich joint that serves out triple decker sandwiches on homemade rye bread (Cafe Santropol at 3990 rue Saint Urbain)... Also as mentioned, Piknik Electronik is tons of fun. Considering both TamTams and Piknik are both free Sundays in Montreal are a great way to recover from Saturday's. We have nothing like them in Toronto.

For accommodations, I used to travel with about 10 friends and we would rent out semi-furnished rooms at Solin Hall which is McGill student residences which are available during the summer months. We would get a 4 bedroom unit for really cheap ($5/each/night) and sleep 7-10 people in each unit on the floors, couches and whatever. They come with electricity and a small kitchenette, two bathrooms with showers, really high ceilings and huge windows. And since they sell booze in the dep's (corner stores) you can get your drinks from the one just up the street from the residence. And you can smoke or do whatever in them.

Call them - they can do reservations over the phone, answer whatever your questions are and usually pretty helpful. For the price - can't be beat, but you'll need wheels or a taxi to get into town quicker.

I love Foufs.

@evang: the people who own the Saute-Moutons also own the Jet Boats in Niagara, and because they take you through the skinny part of the river, it's even more fun because you're basically Dukes-of-Hazzard'ing the rapids every time. It's friggin epic. I have done both and the Niagara one is better. :D
p.s: if you go, ask them to sit you in the "wet seat". Bring spare clothes, LOL!

Follow my advice as it is sincere one. If you can afford a good budget for it, then try to find a nice one
for accommodation. Don't see for cheaper residence at all. You see!
I have experienced it one time in my life and never intend again. It was very bad experience.
