Modular / Flip Up Helmets

I'm shopping for a new helmet most likely this year as mine are all coming up to 5 years old. Just curious who has one and what they thought of that particular model ?

Don't need to hear about how unsafe they are yada yada ... I've got solid chin bars now and I'd like to have a flip face for the next one just to commute / light tour with. The full face I'll keep for my once a year (if that) track day.

Thanks in advance.

I had a Shark Evoline 2. It took a direct hit to the chin bar, smashed the chin vent plastic and popped the visor off. It totally protected my head and after the hit, the chin bar rotating mechanism still worked fine locking in and through its full range of motion. I replaced it with an Evoline 3. Great helmet that allows you to rotate the chin bar fully to the back and still lets you ride around open with the visor up or down. Great for super hot day slow speed commuting in the city.

I also have a full face Shark Speed R, which I find I'm using more than the modular. It's lighter, quieter and warmer in the cold weather. I use the modular more for touring when I want the ease of opening it up without having to take it off. I'm not a Shark fan-boy, they tend to fit my head shape and are good quality for the money.

I have 5 Shark Evoline helmets (that's another story don't ask), and they are excellent touring helmets. Very versatile, not that heavy for the protection they offer, reasonably quiet and they have a drop down tinted visor which means no need for visor changes etc.

Roof's look the coolest.

The LS2 models they had the show seemed decent for the price and get good reviews but they are plastic shell and made in China. Still thinking about getting one as they are half the price of Roof and have a flip down sun visor.

About all I can add to this discussion.

Got a HJC CL Max. It fits well. Just found it a little heavy and big. It's not designed to ride while open so, it's only open when at the gas station or quick stop.

Went with a Shoei QWest FF and realized I didn't miss the flip front all that much. How much time and effort is involved to remove the helmet?

Just adjust the visor for air flow and remain a happy camper.

So the HJC kinda sits there now.

Fwiw, when you ride with the helmet flipped down, you realize it's only there for wind protection. It's not doing a thing for impact.

Not trying to diss. I ride with a bean bucket around town etc. So, I'm not the safety man.

Just found having a true FF has the added benefit of protection after riding around with a modular that didn't. The added weight kinda put me off.

As much as I liked the convenience of a modular,
I'm not sure id invest in a better model for lightness.

That me.

But nothing wrong with the quality of the HJC. Just the bulk and weight.

I have an older HJC that's done well, but never crashed. I'll be getting a newer one this year. It is a little noisy.

I have the Bell revolver, it's ok. Really heavy though and kills my neck, and wind noise is loud but at the price point it is to be expected. Bought it because I wanted a full face that didn't bother my glasses and wasn't a ***** to put on. I mainly stick to my 3/4 helmet with bubble shield.

Bought a Schuberth C3 (Hi-Viz) and it more or less does what it says on the tin. Wasn't super impressed with the ratcheting neck strap but it worked. It's a bit heavier than a standard FF helmet, outward visibility is fine. The internal visor seemed a touch flimsy, no long term usage though. It's a quiet helmet, almost no need for earplugs in the city below 60kph. Two short test rides revealed that the helmet internal shape was wrong for my head (forehead hotspot). What's your size? I'd sell it cheaply if XXXL is your size. Don't laugh, it's not as big as it sounds.

I have an AVG modular, its ok, not great with wind noise and the snap down on the chinbar takes a whack to close it. I wont buy another A GV in this version

Schuberth C3 here. This helmet rocks on the highway as it is very quiet.

It's also my go to winter helmet. The tight sealing neck gasket that keeps it quiet also keeps cold air from coming up into the helmet. The helmet itself is toasty down to any temperature you care to ride at... the pinlocked visor however starts to frost as early as at -14 degrees.

I find that heat, however, is not this helmet's friend. As soon as +10 degree appears and I'm not constantly on a highway, I find the helmet too hot with the visor down/vents open and has no protection with the visor up... so I end up wearing another helmet. Your perception will vary of course.

Bell Revolver here as well. Took a while to break in, but is comfortable now. Does seem noisy though but I don't have a lot to compare against - modulars didn't exist when I rode previously so it's all new.

What size is XXXL in Schuberth ? I ride normally with a Shoei RF series XL sized...

Man, people here have big heads. I'm moving from a medium HJC to a small.

had a HJC Symax and about 1 year in the pivot between the chin bar and the helmet broke and HJC refused to fix it or sell the replacement part so I now refuse to buy an HJC again

Had a Shoei Multitech and now a Neotech no issues with either other than a little pricey and a bit heavier than a non modular full face

Just a quick note. no time now. Somewhere there is a chart as to which are the safest modular helmets. I.e remains locked in a crash.
Got 2 modular. Neotec and one from Italy with the Italian colours for the Ducati. Love them both.

I'll agree with the HJC being a bit heavy and a little noisy. I do like it, though, as I just don't feel comfortable in a FF. There was a thread last year and many people were also talking about the Shark. Will most likely be my next purchase, when time to replace my lid. Fwiw, I only paid $100 all in for the HJC at one of the shows.

My Shoei RF1100 is XXL, so not too far off. Head are such odd shapes though, making it hard to generalize. Ears, foreheads, chins and glasses throw several monkey-wrenches into the works. Forum digging revealed most riders needed to go one size up when switching to a modular, so that's what I did. Close, but no cigar for me, unfortunately. Not sure why the sizing runs a bit small. Maybe more reinforcement around the flip front hinges?
