Mississauga and their Manhole lids

Every spring I notice more manholes have sunk into the pavement on our roads and fewer get repaired. Even some on recently paved roads seem to have sunk.

Hitting one of these depressed lids can send a terrific jolt to any riders who did not have time to react and get around them. I do contract work for the City and was able to get someone to call me back on this. Seems City engineering staff have a lot of excuses as to why these things don't get raised up by the maintenance crews, yesterday's was another lack of staff due to Covid response.

How do other municipalities compare ?

I guess this is why everyone drives SUV's.
Toronto city roads are just bad, mostly from all the construction.
Scarb - I'm just use to it.
Hamilton is the worst.
But generally covers are bad most places.
I was in Ajax coming across baily and it was a decent road but some of the covers were bad.

Whenever you contact them. Do it by e-mail and always copy your local Councilor. This way there is a record. If they havent followed up to your satisfaction e.g did they actually go out and inspect the MH, what were there findings. ... Then followup by copying the Mayor, Councilor, Commisioner of the Works Dept. Mississauaga CEO office. You will get action this way cause now everyone is on notice and they just want to get rid of the complaint.

It's more likely the recently paved roads haven't had the manhole sink, but rather the new pavement grade doesn't match and it's been paved high.

As for comparison, I ride/drive past Arcelor-Mittal/Dofasco in Hamilton, and there's a stretch on Ottawa that's like a minefield with so many low manholes (as well as two very rough railway crossings). Despite crossing the worst stretch at least three times a week, I still haven't puzzled out a route that doesn't involve a tooth-rattling hit at least once...

Those manholes and the tar snakes are a hazard for two-wheelers.
It is not that you can ride on one side of the road to avoid the man holes as these have random placement.
As for the tar snakes, it is a surprise (to say the least!) when you are heeled over and the rear wheel does a "skip and dance".

Eglington and Lawrence would top off any list of worst roads in any city in ON. Those roads have everything, potholes, milled roads, sunken manholes, broken roads...you name it and it's there. The sad part is that LRT construction has been going on for god knows how long, residents probably accepted that it's part of their life now.

Gives new meaning to the term "urban jungle". With the QEW construction, watch for both lanes leading tot he 427 onramp - there are some huge depressions that feel like a car could bottom out above a certain speed.

And that makes it worse. More weight hitting them would make the hole deeper

Vicious circle
Some of them were just full on covered in asphalt on lakeshore lol

Normally they just pave over them and then peel off the layer over the cover. I guess if they wanted to save money and make the road smoother they could leave the asphalt there with the string to cut it out (like foil on a wine bottle). Not sure how well asphalt would cut after curing and proper compaction though.

I'm convinced Halton Hills designs their roads this way, brand new road should be a joy to drive/ride down, nope! covers and catch basins a mile and half below grade

Been here 15 years, every single car and truck we've had has had front end issues

At least the last few years they seem to rehab tiny little residential streets with 7 houses on them and leave the main routes to fall apart, now its getting hard to tell the covers from the shoves, potholes and ruts.... but at least tax money wasn't spent to achieve this rough road

Manhole covers, if they are round then it’s the Region’s responsibility and not that of the City, speaking for Mississauga….

the square ones usually near the curb “storm sewer grates” well those are the City’s domain, but these will rare ever effect a motorcycle rider unless you like riding that close to a curb….

Ok so ever since this thread started. I've been watching the roads for sunken manholes... wow this is such a huge problem. They are literlly every road with this problem. I can't believe there is no way to fix or manage this better.

Anyone been through the intersection at Queenston Rd & Nash Rd in the last 3 days? (Hamilton)
WTF are those things?

It seems that the potholes, sunken manholes, crosswalks with enough paint to paint my house 50 times, new sidewalk bump outs, and rough roads aren't enough to deal with while riding a motorcycle in Hamilton (let alone in the rain), enter these ******* things.......Screenshot_20220905-114138_Samsung Internet.jpg

Oh FFS.

We get to pay for these every year after they are ripped up by the snow plows.

They are to make people make proper left turns. I thought driver training was supposed to do that.

Ottawa is pretty bad.
Interestingly on one of the curved routes I take, they offset them to the left, which makes it harder for motorcycles to avoid them.
