Mirrors

Hey.

So I'm not sure exactly how I should have my mirrors adjusted. Right now I think I have them where I like them, but I keep reading about people who notice the cars behind them. I have my mirrors adjusted mostly to see what's going on in the other lanes since my body is preventing me from pointing it so I can see behind me. I try to adjust it so I have a little of my elbow in view, and when I need to see behind me I just shift over a bit and move my elbow (depending on which tire track I'm in). Is this proper? What is the best way to have them?

Riding the bike I feel a lot more blind to what's around me then driving a car. I don't have a rear view mirror and with the helmet on you have less peripheral vision.

For me it depends on my body position and on the tire track I am in. I constantly adjust my mirrors. After a long ride I am slouching and therefore I need to bring them down a bit. A mixture of sitting up right or leaning forward and tucking your elbow are definitely sufficient to see behind.

You can always buy mirror extenders. Really helped me a lot on my first bike.

I find mirror location to be the most difficult thing to explain. Do what feels right for you. I find that where I have mine on the bike I can see my knuckles with gloves on and part of my elbow. It allows me to see a decent line on both sides of the bike and I always check my blind spot, and have been surprised a couple times when the guy behind me slips in there. Same as Rex905, to see directly behind me I need to tuck my elbow or lift it up, which looks funny.

Tuck elbow and lean head a smidge to see what's behind me.
Had a cop trying to pull me over for over a kilometer cause I didn't see him behind me lmao.
His first question was "Why did it take you so long to stop?" and I explained about the angle of the mirrors, can't see directly behind me unless I lean my head.
He let me go because he was glad I stopped, I clearly was not trying to evade him (I was following the same speed as the car ahead of me) and once he did see me lean my head a bit I pulled over instantly. It was a common trap area and got me 40 over. Nice people those OPP officers. :D

To add about mirror positioning, don't have too much sky showing in your mirror. The reflections of the sun are BLINDING!
