Minivan: Toyota Sienna vs Honda Odyssey

Hi, currently has a Toyota Sienna and it's time to swap to a newer model. Love the reliability. Wife is leaning towards trying the Honda Odyssey. Any feedback / pros vs. cons / experience is much appreciated. At the end, I will go along with "happy wife, happy life" unless something seriously critical of the Honda Odyssey that we should avoid.

One is a potato and the other is tuberous vegetable often cut into strips and fried as a delicious snack.

Which one is cheaper?

2015 Odyssey was noticeably wider in the second row seating area of the eight seater. Only issue we've had with it was with the auto down on the back hatch. My wife is impatient and tends to push the button, wait for a second, and then slam the hatch, which throws an error. Other than that see above.

I've sold both brands, both great vehicles and neither will disappoint. Both are essentially bulletproof if you maintain them properly.

But if I had to choose one over the other, Honda wins.

I like the way it drives more so than the Toyota, it has a bit of character to it while the Sienna is bland in its personality. I'm not a big fan of Honda's new fighter jet style interiors but it works well in the Odyssey. The Sienna is quite dated in its controls/layout in comparison.

Newer design, better more modern tech, looks better (imo). The functionality of the seats is much more adaptable and easier to use for different requirements as well. And you can get it with a shop vac built into the trunk, not a big deal until the kids spill cheerios everywhere or that potted plant falls over. One of smartest features on a van ever imho.

Toyota does offer all wheel drive, but it's an expensive and rare option.

The deal breaker for me is that Toyota STILL doesn't have android auto, although they do have Apple carplay. Honda has both.

thank you. We have a 2yr old and your comment on the shop-vac resonates with me.

I think now it's to keep an eye on when the best deals can be had with Honda ... any insights? :)

You're welcome. Now is a great time to buy, it's model year switch over and all manufacturers are clearing out inventory. On premium vehicles with low volume like minivans there won't be huge deals but you can get a deal on a left over 2019 if you take something from inventory.

Honda.ca is showing 2020 already, so supply might be limited on 2019s, call your local dealers and see what they have left and what they are offering on it. It's getting into slow season in the car business and many dealers are willing to blowout older stock.

This post is the only one you need to read in this thread. 100% accurate in every metric. Ignore the others.

Avoid the 2nd gen odyssey with the the transmission problems.

1999-2004

But definitely take one over a Chevy Venture or Pontiac Montana.

Original poster appears to be looking for a newer one, so the fragile transmission from years ago shouldn't be an issue any more. Buy the one the wife likes.

We just bought the 2018 Odyssey Touring and holy crap...it's awesome. Plenty of power, quiet on the highway, mileage ... meh ... I'm averaging 10-12l/100 and wife is about 16l/100km but it's fine. On the highway I've gotten it down to 7-8l/100km.
Overall too many buttons and features, but it's roomy, quiet, comfortable, powerful...I really cannot say anything bad about it. The engine and transmission are smooth, and the ACC is phenomenal. Takes some getting used to, but the car slows down, speeds up, and maintains speed like a champ.

I'm home next week if you'd like to take a look at it and discuss it in more detail.

FYI if you go for the Sienna with the AWD you apparently lose 1 seat because the driveshaft to the back wheels takes it up. According to Honda salesman. We didn't bother with the Sienna after we test drove the Odyssey.
