Michelin PR3 - 12,000KM Review

I did a trip from Toronto down to Key West Florida last summer (with the mandatory pass by Deal's Gap of course), and wanted rubber that would both last the trip and cover me if we hit the torrential rain they sometimes get in Florida, so I fitted some Michelin PR3s to my SV650s. Pete's had em for just a little over $300 for the pair when I ordered.

Man are these things good! They took the twisties, days of hot superslab at high speed, a couple runs of dragon slaying, heavy rain, and a loaded bike all in stride. I didn't quite get to dragging knee at the dragon but I did drag toe a few times because my monstrous tank bag kept me from getting over enough to do things right. I don't claim to be the most aggressive rider out there, but I haven't exactly been babying these tires either. They have never once lost traction on me in hot, cold, wet or dry (though the stock shoes on this bike did). They'll get a little squirrely over tar snakes or light gravel on a lean, but I've yet to hear of a tire that didn't.

So the trip was somewhere around 9,000km and I've put around another 3,000km before and after by roaming the GTA... These things are barely squared off in the back, and look pretty much new in the front.

I don't know if you can see properly in that closeup of the rear but the wear bars are 3/4 of the way down into that remaining tread. There is TONS of life left on these and I'd feel pretty safe counting on them for an entire second trip down to Florida and back.

I keep my tires well inflated and pay attention to being pretty smooth on the throttle, but still love to take off on WOT every so often. So if you don't get amazing life out of these things, I don't know what you're doing wrong. Am definitely adding another set of these once they're done (though probably not this year by the looks of it).

Would I recommend them for the track? They're probably not the best tool for the job unless you're in the wet. But if you're a commuter or sport tourer, I'd say hands down these are going to be your best bang for the buck.

I've had 2 sets of these tires.
Great tire and i have recommended them many times.
However being overly aggressive with them on a 1L+ bike they do start to feather and get uneven tire wear.
I got about 8-10k out I each pair I had.
Either way it's a fantastic tire and amazing in the rain, great moderately aggressive riding tire and good milage out of them.
Great review btw.
I've done the keys trip myself, one of my most memorable trips :).

Is that only 8-10k with luggage? What does the bike weigh?

Very good review.

These are one of my favorite tires on the market. Long life + performance = Value

Thanks for the great review. I've the same tires but only 5k on the rear and about 2k on the front. Good to see that yours are not squaring out with all that riding.

I've been looking into this tires and keep hearing nothing but good. But, should I just go with PR2's if I don't ride in the rain?

Ever since i got to sport touring tires I haven't looked back. I get about 20k on my rear Pirelli Angels

Why would you go with the older version? The 3's are only like $10-15 more for the pair and they rate better in stopping distance, are quieter, and have slightly better overall handling according to most who have used both. Besides, just because you don't go out to ride in the rain, doesn't mean you're never going to get caught in it.

Trust me, Michelin didn't just sit on its hands for the 4 years between when the 2 and the 3 were released. They improved a lot more than just the number and profile pattern :)

The main reason I stayed with PR2's instead of the 3's is the slits on the front tire are prone to cupping. You can actually see it a little bit in this picture. And also the fronts are quite ugly in my opinion.
I understand it's all to help push water away even more but the PR2 was already an outstanding tire for rain conditions when it was launched.

@ OP: I used to have a SV650S and had PR2's on it. Loved them. Got something just shy of 20,000kms from the rear tire that season.

Now I have a sportbike and I opted to go with a pair of PR2's instead of typical sport tires for a few reasons:
- I will most likely never make full use of sport tires on the street, the softer edge of the PR2 provides more than enough traction for how I like to ride.
- I will most likely not track my bike this year.
- I plan on doing a couple distance runs, and it is also my daily commuter, so I want the longevity that has already proven itself to me.
- And lastly, I have been stuck in torrential downpour multiple times with my SV and I know that I can trust these tires.

Unless I move on to other types of bikes, like a dual-sport or a cruiser, there is a good chance I will keep using these tires until they are no longer available. Given their success, I feel the PR2's and the PR3's will be around for a good while.

I've heard that some people prefer PR2, especially for tread wear. Any feedback on that?

Yup, PR2's seem to have better wear than PR3's. First PR2's were replaced at 23k km, second pair were at 24k km. Current PR3's are at 18k km's and due for replacement, the squiggly line down the middle of the rear tire has pretty much disappeared.

Not too sure what to get next, maybe another set of PR2's if I can find some on clearance somewhere.

I got PR3s as soon as they arrived to Canada and love them. I can't recall ever slipping in the wet on them, other than over the odd paint line.
I'm not super aggressive on the street, but I'm confident with these tires. I've had the rear end come out a time or two due to debris and they come back in line nicely.

Getting good wear, I'm at around 7,000km on them now, and considering that's mostly highway they are holding up good.

Most clearances are for items that are discontinued or simply do not sell well at all. The PR2's do not fit either of those bills.
Remember that I said most. There are other reasons to have clearances as well.

Petes has great prices with 20$ shipping. And they ship fast...
Here are the PR2's at Petes: http://www.petes-superbike.com/pilot-road-c-2234_1_5_13.html

Anyone have this tire on their SS?
