metal in oil filter

I had a leaking head gasket and my valves were due to be checked so I pulled the engine, put a new head gasket,Checked the valves and at the same time put a new tension and cam chain.I flushed the oil from the the top when the head was back on with 4 litres of cheap bike oil, then dumped it and put in good oil.

I left the old oil filter on that had 4000 km's on it and ran the bike for 200km with new oil to catch any other garbage that might of went in the oil system just by cleaning the head and the cylinder mating surfaces.

Then I pulled the oil pan and the oil pump strainer to make sure there was nothing in there and all was good.

I decided to open up the oil filter with a pipe cutter to see. And there was some tiny shiny pieces in almost all the filter and there was a few slivers.

This is a 25 000Km(16000 miles) engine and this filter is a 4000km filter.

almost all was non magnetic and a few tiny tiny little hairs were magnetic...

I assume this is normal but I have never opened up a metal oil filter before.

Any thoughts?

Please check the link for the pic..ITs hard to see but all the little shiny specs are the metal

If you want to be sure. I know that in commercial heavy truck diesel motors then take oil samples and can pay to get them tested? Not sure but maybe you can buy the sample kit from "Wear check" and maybe they can do it for bikes????

Thanks for the reply.I guess Before I do that I will run the bike with fresh oil and a fresh filter for a good 1000km and then pull the filter and look at it again.Hopefully it's nothing.

Are you sure your did all your work properly? and nothing is rubbing/binding etc and causing this metal to flake off?

Why did you take your frame apart ?

Yes I have done this numerous times and all according the original shop manual.I should of pulled the filter off before I did the job and put in a new one and looked at it.But I will run it for a bit and pull the filter again.I ordered a magnetic drain plug too.But there was absolutely nothing in the pan which I found weird.Have you pull appart a filter? If so was there anything in it?

The reason I took the frame appart is because I do this to all my bikes, when I pull the engine I do everything..steering head bearings, forks,Rear suspension lube etc etc...This is my 10th bike And I have done it to all of them..

1000 RR's have head gasket issue?

I wouldn't worry too much, I would change the oil and run the motor with a new filter...if there aren't flakes in the oil pan it should be fine.

Thanks:)

This 1000RR is the worst honda I have ever had for leaks.I bought it with 5000km's on it and it's one leak after another with this thing,The head was leaking were you see the timing chain guides, there is a oil pressure port to lube the cams. This engine was not put together right. My oil pan was leaking at the split line,I had to redo that, I had to replace the valve cover gasket because oil was leaking into the spark plug cavety and leaking throught the drain hole on the head below the exaust,The stator cover was spitting oil through the wire that goes to the rectifier....Im hoping it's done now.I had them all...CBR 900,929,954 ,1000's and this is the first time I get one like this...Im not impressed One bit...As much as I like fixing them,it's starting to be a pain.

you should check the crankcase vent, make sure its not blocked, that could be the answer to your oil leaks!

That's exactly what I was thinking definitely sounds like excessive crank case pressure with that many leaks.

I really wish that was the problem:(...That is one of the first thing I checked when I started having the problems.I have been running for quite a while now with no leaks other than the head gasket one which was no a big leak but since I had time and I was there I changed it.

I even bought a gauge to check the pump's oil pressure at the sensor and it was bang on was the manual calls for.

In any case I hope that the metal shavings are nothing :(

Today I went for a 200km ride in all ranges of rpm and came back home to open up the new filter and it had absoluty nothing in it.I will check it again in another 1000Km just to be sure but so far so good. and no leaks :)...I like that lol

It's pretty common to find aluminum in the filter. As long as it's non metallic, it shouldn't be a big deal. Most of the aluminum comes of the castings themselves.

Yes I thought the same thing as they wanted minumum 800km.But the weather was not permitting.I called wear check and He said not a problem since I wasnt looking for coolant or wanting to know how much the oil was good for.I aslo ran that 457Km from 6000-10000km continuously
