maybe thinking of a supermoto ? thought and opinions please

so ive had a hayabusa 1300gsxr before ended up selling it as its a lot of bike to have on the street but also hated how heavy it was to maneuver around when riding in twistys and etc so I got rid of it and now I really miss having a bike ! :( .....I have an 08 Honda tr450 race quad I play with but I find I end up riding it around on the street more then anything around here and gravel roads and etc lol and have been doing research about different bikes like the kawi 300 honda 250....and then I saw a supermoto on the street and thought oh that's could be perfect nice and light and tons of power for in the city were I live and enough power for the highway to visit my parents back home (were my quad stays).... plus i'll be a lot more comfortable on a bike like that as ive grown up riding dirt bikes all my life since I was 5 or so....

so I have questions on how they are for riding comfortabilitly and power compared to say a 450 dirtbike/quad, or 600 street bike, insurance cost of em, as well mileage.... im only familiar with that stuff with my hayabusa I had before is there brands to stay away from ? I kind of like the ktm supermoto's....

please post any info or even pics of your supermoto to help me out, that would be great

Mildmay? That's all flatland, no big city. Coming off a busa you might feel frustrated on a single after a while.

Re: maybe thinking of a supermoto ? thought and opinions please

Im in guelph and have 690smc , It does what is surposed to do very well. It is fast compared to most of the street singles, but it is nothing like my cbr1100xx. I put a aftermaket seat on mine , as the stock one was a standard ktm off road plank.

If you have specific questions about my bike I would be happy to chat
I might even sell you mine if yr interested as I dont really ride it that much .

Thanks
Herb

I'm down in guelph now ;)

Get a big SuperMoto. Good for Guelph and around. I ride my 650 motard all around. It's lovely.

Re: maybe thinking of a supermoto ? thought and opinions please

get a 600cc SSand a 400-525cc DS/SM. Diversified

Re: maybe thinking of a supermoto ? thought and opinions please

I love my Hypermotard 1100s. I would recommend a big supermoto after riding that hyabusa.

What kinda of mileage do you get with it ? Like I know my busa was amazing on fuel :D and yea I've heard the stock seats are like riding on a wooden plank haha

Like my 450 race quad I have is VERY peppy and if I can get something aroind the same peppiness that be great ! :) basically my quad will do wheelies almost every gear on just throttle :) haha I really enjoy the low end grunt of a 4 stroke. I saw a really nice drz-400 all black gorgeous bike but have been told there quite gutless compared to most... Cosmetically I'd love a bike that's all black, or at least easily changed to black, no big goofy mirror, or lights on it either ... What are good prices for these guys and also does the amount of km's work the same as say a street bike ? Or is it more so like on a 4stroke dirtbike/quad and go by hrs ?

I have no idea of the mileage it gets , really depends on how you ride it .. I think the light comes on about 175 or 190 km. Mine has the offroad fuel map installed , to work with the wings exhaust and ktm open airbox cover, as opposed to the snokel . The wings silencer is a ti , is basically an Akropovic clone. I also have quality bar end mirrors on custom bar sliders then should save the mirror in a tip over, avs levers , and a custom stainless luggage rack that really follows the lines of the bike. Also have the stock tires that have less than 1000 km on it . MT60s currently mounted. About 6000 km on the bike.

If your interested in coming by and chatting please pm me . I really dont care if I sell it or not, but every once an while I getthe urge for a pure dirtbike instead. Your welcome to come by and chat even if you have no interest in buy it..

Re: maybe thinking of a supermoto ? thought and opinions please

If you came from a Busa then a drz probably wont be for you. It's heavy and sluggish compared to other supermoto's, but tank like reliability. Maybe a bigger husky/ktm 500/530/625/640/690 could work for you. These bikes aren't meant for really high speeds. Some SM's are capable of getting up there but the wind makes it less fun anyway and the motor will be singin'.

I have a drz and it's a ton of fun, but I use it as a toy on weekends and little rides here and there. Ideally I would have 2 bikes to get the best of both worlds like some others have said. You need to be realistic and take a look at what kind of riding you will be doing. For example If I was relying on the DRZ as a daily highway commuter, I would have been disappointed with my purchase. It's plenty capable, but let's get real, there are better options for that kind of use.

As for your question about mileage. It's tough to say. You can see any bike with 10,000km in worse shape than one at 40,000km. It really depends on how it has been treated and maintained. Look for signs of abuse and make an educated decision. You should be able to find a used DRZ for 3400-5000 depending on condition.

If you end up looking at drz's, the appearance as you mentioned can be changed very easily and very cheap. Lights, mirrors, plastics, etc... Same goes for most other SM's

well the type of riding I will be doing is going to be likely driving it within Guelph here, mostly city prolly be the odd time I drive it back to my parents for visiting (1.5hr drive) all hwy (country rds) and small towns to get there.. I really enjoy the low end torque on my quad so if I can get something that pulls that hard but doesn't have crazy top end power i'll be happy..

Re: maybe thinking of a supermoto ? thought and opinions please

Sounds like you would be okay with an SM with the type of riding you'll be doing. I will do the odd hwy trip on the drz and it can do it fine, just not nearly as comfortable as other options.

I'm not convinced you'll be happy with the power though on a drz. The weight, gearing, and relatively low power means it's not really going to be popping the front wheel just cranking the throttle in anything over 2nd gear. If you get it up with no clutch in 3rd it will require some body english. You'll be clutching it up for sure. I'm not trying to steer you away from one, I love mine and will ride it until it's dead. But that snappy power you seek will be found in the lighter, higher displacement sm's. See if you can ride one first and test it out. The 690smc the poster above mentioned may be worth checking out. I'd love to have one of those.

yea I wanna have a bike that will wheelie on just power, clutch wheelies aren't for me lol, I like my power :) I mean I can clutch wheelie but I prefer just throttle wheelies hahaha..... but yea maybe i'll check out and drive some drz's and ktm 500 or 690.. I just aint a huge fan of the orange/black scheme on em... I know you can get em grey/black ..... but i'll have to check em both out, ktm is also a lot more pricy I find too lol

Re: maybe thinking of a supermoto ? thought and opinions please

I was gunning for a 690 Enduro R with SM wheels or a 690 SMC (couldnt find one) or a 690 SM(R).

Ended up with a Duke. Similar to all of the above but an improved suspension for the street.

May be worth checking out but it will feel slow to you. It will probably be better on the road tho.2009-ktm-690-duke-2.jpg
