Married/Common law status

My insurance company said that when my GFand I have have been living together for over a year to let them know and they'll make a change to my policy and save some $$.
I assume it's because we'll be Common-law?

Now my GF and I have been living together for many years. When we first started dating she started staying over at my old place and next thing I knew she wasn't leaving, and all her stuff was at my place...and she had a key.
:p

Now what makes it offical that we are common law? As I said, we have been living together for many years now. It's only this past October that we purchased a house together in both our names and all our mail is coming to the same address.

Can I just tell my insurance company that we've been living together for over a year (cause we really have) or is there an offical record somewhere they check?

We're planning on getting married at the end of the year anyhoo.

The government has a legal definition of common-law. Basically if you have been living together for x amount of time and represent yourselves to others as a couple, you are hitched. I don't remember the actual lengths of time, but IIRC, the longest time period was 3 years. You are over that period, so go ahead and let your insurance company know and reap the benefits.

i think it's 6 months now for common law, but we need to see pitures of the girl friend, so it will be legal.

I think I have a picture of her on my deskt......WAIT A SECOND!!!! LOL!

:p

I have been living with my gf for over 4 1/2 years but everything I have (mail, license, etc) are registered under my parent's address. Would this apply to me as well? O_O

Yeah...I'm curious what to say when I call my insurance company.

My GF and I have been living together for over a year now...what proof do I have? well....none really. WAIT! Look at my Cable usage and all the watched episodes of the kardashians and the OC!! See!!

Very sneaky... and smart girl.

If it means anything, my auto insurance company (Desjardins) gives me a discount because my gf and I are common-law.

They said all they needed was us to have lived together for the past year or something like that.

Well... Doesn't that suck then... So what if I changed my bike to be stored at my gf's house. Would that count?
Bike stays at my parents house during the Winter months or when there needs to be work done on it.

Buddy of mine joked once that my then-roommate and I should declare common law to maximize our tax returns lol. We were roommates for about 3 years so I started thinking 'why the hell not?' Suddenly I got flashbacks of Three's Company and never considered it again.

So what do they go by? The address on our Drivers License?

GG.
Maybe I should change my address over... But then you never know when something may happen....

That's why my dad hasn't changed his address over to his GF's house where he lives. Just incase something happens and the GF (now common law) will get all his moolah and leave his kids with squat!

My GF never changed her address over to my old one all those years we were living together becuase it was an Astonomical insurance hike.

Too bad that wouldn't matter one bit if there were actually separation agreements. Just because you don't change your address over doesn't mean that the courts won't consider you common law.
