Depends if your area allows port forwarding. You can check this out on there website.
I had to get a new number In Trenton area but this worked out well to do away with all the telemarketers. ;)

Curious question, if you have MJ and call 911 will it work just like a land line ? Or will you have trouble getting emergency services when you need them, will they know your address from where your calling ?

There's an option to enter your address online. That way they know the address associated with the #

Worked fine I just submitted the request online and less than a week later it was done

Dropped land line and home phone for close to a decade. Don't miss it at all. Course the $$ saved goes somewhere else.

Had Ooma for nearly a year. Zero telemarketers in that time. Get the base unit from Costco, if you pay for Premium (still way cheaper than landline) there's tons of options like call forwarding, phone based app, send voicemails via email etc etc.

I use Primus TalkBroadband - I was one of their first customers when it came to market in 2004 or so. VoIP was in it's infancy back then.

I pay a little more now than what I could find via a service like Magic Jack, BUT the Primus service has a lot of features that block telemarketers and other spam/junk calls like fax spam or the "Congratulations you've won a cruise!" type garbage. The "Telemarketer guard" feature in addition to the feature that screens "Blocked name/number" calls weeds out nearly 100% of the garbage.

I often consider porting our our number to something like MJ and saving the $15/month I'm paying for the service currently, but then I remember all our friends who complain endlessly about telemarketers...and I decide that so long as I decide to keep a landline, that $15/month for a silent phone that only rings for actual friends or family is money well spent.

Still have it, or stopped? And if stopped, why?

still have it....wouldn't change it at all. The savings and the peace and quiet are worth their weight in gold. Tipping point was 3-4 air duct cleaning calls plus a couple of "your windows machine is infected" calls in a week.

LMAO you too eh? lol

Take note that porting out of MagicJack (to another phone provider) is notoriously horrific - They are well known for holding numbers hostage, so keep this in consideration.
