Macbook worth fixing?

The bar under the trackpad went kaput. Trackpad still works fine, but can't "click" on anything.

Called a repair man and he says Apples are expensive to fix cause the trackpad is one entire part $$$$. Recommends, better off to buy a refurb to replace it for same cost? Says repair would be around $250...about the same as a refurb macbook. For new, he recommended Sony, Toshiba, Lenovo. HPs are bad quality apparently and have suspect build quality.

Seriously jonesing for the new Sony Pro 13 with the new Haswell chipset, or maybe, maybe, the new Macbook Air for about the same price and same haswell.

Its the older white macbook and its about 5-6 years old or so. It's kind of slow, and crashes a little more often than I would like. Not sure if worth repairing?

What say u?

buy a mouse. I'd rather have any mac over a pc.

lol. I have one! Bought it when I got the macbook and NEVER used it. Just sat in the drawer. Pulled it out for the first time now to get me through, but its a royal PITA now to drag the mouse around when I move the laptop around from room to room (which is quite frequently, and hence why I am looking for an ultralight replacement, can't do tablets, need a keyboard)

Have you gone to the actual apple store and asked if they can quote you for a repair?

I let my fingers do the walking. Can't be bothered driving to an apple store. I'm lazy and order everything online. Free shipping is great.

I never knew Apple crashes

Is there a way to use the trackpad for everything the way my mac does. Two fingers for double click and one finger for clicking. Just a thought.

What model Mac do you have? ie. A1468, A1592 etc.

You can decode the Mac serial number, certain websites can give you all the details about what the model is. From what I can tell, you have the all white MacBook, but they have two versions where the bottom half of the laptop is all one piece minus the bottom cover where all the goodies sit and then there was a very similar model where the bottom half also has a bottom plate but also a seam along the top part where the palm rest and keyboard are.

This will be tough to determine if its even worth fixing, you could try to find one used for dirt cheap as a spare computer or call up apple spare parts number and have them give you a quote on pricing for the part you need and the part number itself so you can just google the part number required and see if you can find it cheaper elsewhere.

As mentioned above, the trackpad on majority of the laptops are part of the palm rest portion and not separate.

$250 for the replacement?? Would take about 30 mins to take it apart, figure out where the track pad is plugged in, unplug the old trackpad, plug in the new one, and close it up.
(30 mins for someone that is moderately educated in computer hardware and about an hr for someone who doesn't know what they're doing - with the chance of breaking it of course)

http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Pro-13In-Trackpad-922-9525/dp/B004M9MOAY I suspect other models would be in a similar price range. Don't know too much about macs cause I'm not too fond of them.

Heres a less than 3 min on how to replace a trackpad on a macbook:
