M1-exit Test Burlington road route?

Hi guys. I got my MTO M1-exit test coming up at Burlington this Friday (may 4th, 2012).

So, according to the book, you have to do the figure-8 walk, serpentine run, accelerate/brake test, and then a short road test.

I have searched everywhere but could not find the small road test route they make you undergo at Burlington!

Can someone please tell me if they know what the road test route will be! Also any tips for that portion. Thanks!

Oh and btw, I have practiced enough on my SS and can do the notorious serpentine run! 50% of the time is perfect...the other 50% of the time, I gotta put 1 foot down :D

I am doing the same test on Friday as well, but in Clinton, and I have no idea where we are riding, but if you read in the back of your book it looks like they basically make you go around the block and they stand on the corner and watch you, when I went to write my M1 the MTO chick joked with me saying that if I am going to drop my bike on the exit test do it on one of the back roads where they can't see me. lol
If you are comfortable you will be fine i am sure, but the 50% for the serpentine...are you dragging your rear brake? Best if you don't put your foot down at all. Good luck and let us know how you do and I will do the same.

Yes of course I am dragging the break. Playing with the clutch, throttle, and rear brake the whole time.

What bike are you intending to do the test with?

Luckily for me I have a little Ninja 250, so it's nice and light. I am sure you and I are in the same boat, been practicing in parking lots and such, I have to say the only thing that I had to practice a lot is the walking of the bike in a figure 8 as I have never had to walk my bike, and I actually found it awkward, kept kicking my foot pegs. Good luck on Friday and I hope they are not calling for rain in Burlington, I am near London and they are calling for 60% chance of thunderstorms and I have a 50 min ride just to get to where I am taking my test.
I wasn't knocking you about dragging the rear brake, I was just asking because when I first started practicing I wasn't doing it and I was occasionally having to put my foot down but once a friend that has ridden for years said to drag the rear with a bit of throttle what a difference.

You bike looks super sharp and HEAVY!! lol Is that the bike you are doing the test on? The one in your avitar pic?

I am also in the same predicament as you. Im taking a day off graduate school to do the test and there is a high chance of thundershowers tmrw! The drive test centre is about 40 mins from my house as well. Lets hope it doesnt rain tmrw at all.

And about walking the bike. Yes the cbr600rr is a bit difficult to walk with but I'm a big guy, so I can manage. The ninja shouldn't be too bad. Take your time when doing the figure 8. Quick tip for you....when beginning the figure-8 motion, you will be walking with the bike leaning towards your side (the kick stand side). At this point, lean the bike as much as you can as its really easy. But when you have to lean it the other way, just put the bike upright (dont lean it towards the right as it will probably fall), and turn the steering fully towards the right and steadily walk the bike. Then in the end, you'll have to do a full U-turn with the bike leaning on your side. This part is easy once again. Just take your time on the first U-turn of the figure-8 slow and steady.

What book are you guys referring to that explains the different things you have to do? I've got my test on May 14th and was going to just wing it (prior riding experience abroad) but it'd be nice to know what I'm getting into.

EDIT: Turns out I already had a PDF of the book. I thought it was just for M1 questions and didn't actually read beyond that point previously. :)

Thanks for the advice, I have been walking my bike in the arena parking lot looking like a tool, lol...but whatever being 39 makes me pretty calm. I am sure I will do fine, like I said the walking was the only part I was a little concerned with. Good luck tomorrow!! Let me know how you do, and I will do the same.

Also now we have a severe thunderstorm watch going on but they are not calling for rain anymore tomorrow!!

Hey buddy. I crashed and totaled my bike today :( So not going to be doing any test tmrw.

Goodluck with yours tho!

Hey just to let ya know I passed with 0 points deducted, it was a breeze, only one guy out of 6 of us failed, and it was for a minor traffic violation. Hope you are doing alrioght after your accident.

Ok folks , here is the whole Burlington M1 exit test as I took it last Friday and passed. Now I'm a new rider , been only riding for a month. My first bike is a 2007 GSX-R 600. As long as you believe in your self, you will pass highly.

So to start off, try not to be nervous and psyching yourself out. When I arrived there, the 3 level pylon course is located beside the cinema in the same vicinity as the drive test center ( not hard to find). If you get there at least an hour early which I suggest you to do, you can practice the course. Do not worry you are allowed too as the instructor even mentioned that to our group after the tests were done.

So here we go...

1st) You have to walk your bike around a couple of pylons in a figure eight motion. Don't worry, you do not need to walk it through the whole course. For the 600cc and bigger bikes, you are allowed to stop and back up if you come close to the curb and correct yourself. So if you have a chance to practice, I suggest you to go to an empty parking lot and start walking the bike and getting the feel of it

2nd) Oh yes the dreadful serpentine test. Now how I've been practicing this was setting up the course in an empty parking lot and doing this for a few hours. Yes it is boring but as what my friends said to me practice , practice, practice. Here's the course set up... you have 2 pylons beside each other 1 meter apart and the pylons ahead are 15 feet apart.

" each dot is a pylon" remember you go around both pylons in a serpentine motion not just around each pylon. Trust me me a few people did get a little confused while practicing . Once you hit the end, you do a U turn , without putting your feet down or try not to come close to the curb and repeat the course. Now when I was practicing before my test time, I was starting the course with motion. When you do the test, the instructor will tell you to start off right at the pylon. It is a little tricky but if you have very well throttle and clutch control you should be fine ( remember to ride the rear brake and don't use the front). Now I have nothing to hide, I did put my foot down numerous of times as well as other riders. Its not a terrible thing just make sure you correct yourself and be calm. Don't give up if feel you are doing horrible on it.

<---- START

3rd) Straight line through the pylons another U turn but this one the instructor says its ok" you can go wide on it". Then you come back down around 30kmph and in second gear and do an emergency stop. Here's some tips I got from my friends. Try not to skid, always look up and when you come to a complete stop, look both ways and proceed.

4th) Last part is the mini road test. After you all made it , you drive your bikes to a corner in the mall lot (yes the drive center is located in the same lot as the mall). So you all meet and he/she discusses what the final test is. Now to me this was the easiest test. The instructor will stand on a rock near the garden and observe your riding skills. What the test consists of is very basic riding skills. You first need to leave the mall lot, even while passing the open lanes where cars come out , make sure you meticulously check your mirrors and also lots and lots of shoulder checks. So you first make a left on North Service Rd to leave the plaza. You will be obviously in the left lane. Make sure you shoulder check and change to the right lane lane safely. The instructor doesn't care about riding positions as in protecting your lane. He cares about your shoulder checks and mirror checks. So you go through the light. If you do get a red light, just be tedious with shoulder checks and be in gear. Don't take your hands off the bar and be in neutral. Be in first gear while going through the intersection then shift gears. I was told that by an experience rider. So now that you went through the intersection , you need to pull in a costco plaza and make a u turn to get back on the same st as you started on. Don't worry the instructor cant see you at this time. Now once you make a left back on North Service, when you get to brant st you make a right. The instructor at this time can see you, so yield properly, signal, shoulder check and accelerate with caution. Then once your back on brant st, you turn into another mall lot which will be on your left, and make another u turn ( instructor cant see you at this time) make a right get back on brant st , yield onto north service ( at this time you are right in front of the instructor) head up back to the mall entrance , and proceed back to the instructor. Very simple and easy to do. I really saved my self a lot of money by doing the test through the ministry. If you have help through friends or anyone you know who is an experience rider, I suggest you ask them all the questions in the book and let them teach you. They were great help. Remember to practice , practice and practice. There's lots of times to ride in a straight line, but you are good rider when you can maneuver your bike in a slow motion.

So again ... be calm, be in control, use common sense, ride safe and have a great summer everyone.

Good luck to all

Thanks so much for the detail description! That's exactly what I need as I will be doing the test at the end of this month.

Just two questions, for the serpentine test, how wide do I allow to turn? can I do more like a bowtie instead of simple S?

Also, since a friend and I schedule to have the test at the exact same time but we only have one bike, is it possible that we can share the bike during the test? As I understand, we will only be examined one at a time, right?

Thanks again!!
