M test with a SENA?

Happy Canada Day All,

I have my M test booked for July 12th at Downsview. One thing that I have not really had any luck finding information on is the type of headset they use.

I am currently using a Shark Evoline series helmet with the Sena SMH10 installed.

Has anyone had experience taking an M test with a communication system already installed?

I was thinking my two options could be to remove it before taking the test to make room for whatever headset they are providing or removing the paired headset from the GF's helmet and giving it to the instructor to use to communicate with me.

Any input would help as I want it to go smooth as possible once I get there.

Thanks in advance.

They use their own system. It's a walkie talkie with a wired ear piece. You put the walkie talkie part in your pocket.

Just use their walkie talkie system. Less to worry about as you will have a million others things on your mind.

When I took mine in Brampton, the earpiece portion they give you was so big (it was the full around the ear thing). It took me a few minutes to manage to put my helmet on without pulling off my ear with it.

It looked like this http://www.buytwowayradios.com/products/impact/eh1.aspx

I have a scala in my helmet and it doesn't really make a difference (the speakers are behind the liner).

Thank you,

There wont be any issue with their system. Ive always heard refereed to as a headset so I didnt want it to interfere with my set up but Its clear now that it wont.

Bring a pair of in-ear head phones, the little bud type, if you have. The set they provided me to use was just a huge pain, and their scotch tape fix was no better. A pair that you know are comfortable in your ears would help a lot.

Your Sena has the 3.5mm aux input jack so just plug their walkie talkie into your Sena and you may actually be able to hear the instructions.

And if you can actually hear them, you'll be ahead of a lot of us who had to use their crappy earphones.

^THIS.

I was actually wondering the same thing, as I have a SMH10 as well, and my helmet fits so snugly there's no way I could use their ear piece (before I got the Sena, I tried with apple earbuds once and they actually cut my ears when I put my helmet on). If their system uses a 3.5mm plug, then that's perfect.

Also while on the topic, does anyone know if RTI, Learning Curves, etc uses the same type of system, so I could jack in as well?

That is an excellent idea if it will work out. If others have been successful using their personal headphones then there shouldn't be a problem using the sena headphone jack.

Thank you all and I hope this will help others in the future as I don't think there had been a thread on this

fyi, one thing I just thought of is the aux in is only 1-way, not 2-way. Therefore if you wire it in, you can hear them but they can't hear you. Not sure if this is a big deal or not, but it could be if you need to ask them to repeat instructions.

As far as I know (haven't done the M2 exit myself yet), you aren't given a mic. You only receive instructions. If you need them to repeat, you tap on the side of your helmet.

If you can hook up your Sena microphone up to their walkie talkie, you should sing all throughout the M test.

bohemian rhapsody? lol

Yeah, their system is one way. Don't worry about talking back on your Sena.

My tester used surgical tape. The kind they use in hospitals for dressing wounds.

No issues with hearing or it coming off. Waxes your ear hair pretty nicely afterwards.

So I went for the test today and they couldn't use the sena. Their radio headphone jack is too small. They didn't know had to try. They always assumed it was a standard size. That being said I don't think a personal set of head phones would work either without an adapter.

More importantly though I passed without any major problems. :). Just got one deduction for going 60 on the Allen when it is a 70.

Nothing an adapter (probably 3.5mm to 2.5mm) from eBay, MonoPrice, DealExtreme, etc wouldn't fix so long as you knew in advance -- I figure you must be able to stop in and check first if you really wanted. Congrats on passing your test!
