Looking to get my first bike

Hey all soon to be fellow riders. I just got my M1 and I'm looking to get my first bike. I'm thinking a 2007 Honda Cbr 125 cc and up. I always envisioned myself on a bigger bike but I really want to do this safely. Any input or suggestions is greatly appreciated. Cambridge/West Galt.

Depending on how big you are and how young you are, you might want to consider a 250. That's what I got for myself as a first bike.

Do take the Learner's course though. I HIGHLY recommend it. I would've already given up on riding without it...

I'm 38 Yrs old and about 173 cm but on the slim side (165lbs). I have already looked into the Learner's course however I live in Cambridge and so far the closest one available is in Toronto. Unless you may be able to suggest something closer by.

Yeah, I'd definitely recommend a 250.
Did you check Kitchner or Guelph??

I contacted Learning Curves and was told that the closest one is in Toronto but I'll look into Kitchener and Guelph. It would be so much more convenient. What year/make 250 cc do you recommend?

You have 2 close course to you in Kitchener. Conestoga college does one and OMSCA. I did OMSCA as I heard better reviews about it and was really satisfied. I think now they are about $400 and do everything over the weekend and come out with your M2.

P.S. Honda CBR250's are nice little starter bikes.

Well there are three 250s that i'm aware of in the Street/Sport bike category. (I'm a newb myself.)

There is the Ninja 250r, CBR250 and the Hyosung 250.
The race was between the Ninja and the CBR for me when I was buying.
The Ninja you can get older models. CBR is new so the oldest you can go is 2011. So your budget will decide which way you might go.

Then there are a bunch of differences between the Ninja and the CBR. But those are worth going over once we know what your budget is.

Do you happen to have any contact info for OMSCA and does it require that you have your own bike? I already have my gear as far as helmet/gloves/boots but no bike yet.

Thanks NewDude. I am for sure going to go with a 250 as my new bike based on your info as well as my reasearch. It seems like when people buy their first bike with a 125 cc they tend to get rid of it within weeks.

If you can't find anything near you i would just try to get a cheap motel room and book it in Toronto. It's only 2 nights since the courses run friday evening to sunday (the day you take the test). It's added money but it's still worth the experience. I recommened Centennial College's course, it's not mentioned on here as often as some of the others but i found their instructors and their bikes and lot to be excellent.

As for bike size, there is no hard and fast rule on which bike is best as a first bike, each person is different. The good thing about the MSF course is that you can learn and practice on theirs, and they have a mix of 125's and 250cc sport bikes, as well as 250cc cruisers. I got to try all of them when i did the course thinking i was going to want a sport bike after i got my license, but then i learned i did not like the sitting position on them. So i used 250cc Suzuki Marauder (cruiser) to do the test and passed and i knew from that it would be too small for me. My first bike after getting my m2 was a 750cc cruiser which has a ton of power as it's a v4, and it wasn't too big or hard to handle at all. I am heavier though, but personally i'm glad i didn't start on something smaller now looking back. I'm already planning on a 1100cc or larger next season.

Yeah given your size, the 250 would be a better choice.
Hope you have fun in the class! I know I did! It's a great experience. Riding itself is an amazing experience. Just wait till the very first time you actually get on the road.

Hey welcome man! If your still hunting, you should consider checking out some 500's, honestly you would prob really enjoy a little bit bigger bike, I'm about the same size as you and I'm on a 550 (actually 572cc) the learning curve is super quick you'll feel comfortable witch the first week of riding, just my $0.02 lol but good luck on the hunt, Hope you find a good machine! Cheers man

Welcome, I'm inclined to agree with the other posters...go bigger. Good luck and have fun.

Hamilton has a course as well, done at the Mohawk Campus in Stoney Creek. Can't for the life of me remember the name of the place, but the instructors were very nice and helpful.

I'm the same height as you (albeit lighter) and if your height is mostly in your legs like it is with me, you'll be able to handle something bigger as well. Long legs are a blessing for motorcycles ;)
