I would like to get my soon to be 32 yr old son a turntable. He has one right now that is pretty much a peice of junk and he would love a half decent one.He doesn't have good speakers, receiver etc,so he would be happy with anything that works better than what he has.
Does anyone (KW area would be great) have anything i could buy?

Bay Bloor radio had a very decent entry level Pro-Ject table for sale give them a call. I think it was $199.

Do you want some Technic 1200's? I have a couple kicking around that I am trying to sell. One needs a new pitch control (it works without it, but it would be hell to DJ with, its pitch jumps around when you move the slider) so it is a little cheaper. Make me an offer.

Natural sound shop on Victoria Street, ( near the expressway ) has a good selection of used turntables, they are friendly and know there stuff there without the hype of the big box stores.

Did you want a CD turntable or a vinyl turntable?

Unless you're buying privately, it'll be much more expensive here. I bought new ones online and paid less than what I would've paid if I bought used here. Then I got my money back when I sold it here. The difference in pricing is honestly THAT bad.

Also, how serious is he about it? Not just any brand/model will do

Something to be aware of:
If you have a receiver that has a phono input, you have a lot of options. If it does not have a phono input, this scenario limits your choice, as you will need to buy a turntable that has a built-in pre-amp (unless you want to buy an additional pre-amp)

As a generality, sticking with reputable names will get you a good product - any brand sold at Bay Bloor Radio is a good place to start. Assuming budget consciousness, I'd look into Denon. If you're looking for something that just works, the above still applies, but obviously, you'll have more selection (used, low end brands etc)

Also, you should also consider a good cartridge.

hope this helps

I'm no turntable expert, but there seems to be a few decent ones on craigslist. http://toronto.craigslist.ca/search/?areaID=25&subAreaID=&query=turntable&catAbb=sss

The Thorens is a deal provided it's condition is as advertised. A bit too fragile if he plans on carting it around here and there (they have to be disassembled and packed properly), but set up (properly) and left in place semi-permanently it would be a good buy.

Almost all of my home theatre was purchased from the folks on CanuckAudioMart. Not one bad buying experience.

Good point! I forgot about that forum, i am on there too.

On a side note, who's looking for records / vinyl?
I got a stack of all kinds, some were mine, some collected along the way, i'll have to see what's there.
I lent a couple crates full to a friend once, took him a couple years to return them, and then i notice many aren't mine, and many are missing!

I should have all the Zep albums if they weren't stolen.

I'll have to make a list when i get some time.

My sister has the "White album", "Tea for the Tillerman" and "Catch Bull at Four" all unopened in her family room.Mounted on a wall in frames.
