Locks

What is most effective at slowing jackers down? Kryptonite? I used to have a disc alarm lock that I got in germany. It was hardened steel and felt very solidly made. I don't recall the name but it was a few hundred bucks ca. going back about 4 years. Also the way it locked on the disc made getting in to pry or cut very awkward. A good friend didn't bother returning that.

What kind do you feel safer using?

A disc lock is great until they just pick up the bike and put it in the back of their van. If you put a chain on make sure you put it through the frame and not just the wheels.

I'd guess a super loud klaxon would be the best. Cuz a lock, they'll quietly cut and off they go. The klaxon will at least draw some attention to them.

A klaxon with a well hidden powersource at that.

True but if one locking device slows down certain ill equipped thiefs that is good, one more wall to cross. Or if your out it fits in a pocket and is better then nothing. I plan to have decent alarm installed but I like locking things up as well.

Chains can be cut rather easily, I've lost many keys and know from experience. Pad locks as well.

Probably it was an Abus Granit. I use one of those locks on my motorcycle. It's a U-bolt design with a massive hardened steel body and passes the U-bolt through the front disk rotor. There is very little of the bolt exposed, making it very difficult to cut using bolt cutters or saw.

Most often, I find any theft deterrent system/device is just that, a deterrent. It's meant to convince the thief to move on to the next bike. If your expecting it to prevent the theft all together then I suggest you get comfortable riding the bus.
Just sayin'...

In my opinion installing an alarm and securing it with disc lock will be a good investment.

Does anyone listen to alarms any more?

Disc locks are harder to cut than cable or chain locks. A lithium battery angle grinder with cutoff wheel will cut through anything in 30 seconds, or less.

That sounds familiar. I think it was 130db and went off with any shock or movement.

The way I look at it the more obstacles they have to cross to take your bike the longer they have to stick around..the more nervous they will become. And may end up bailing.

If I could have it my way I'd be wheeling my bike through the back doors and parking it in the living room.
