locating bearings

Trying to find 30x48x13 and 30x48x14 tapered roller bearings for a steering head, all balls does not seem to have it and I am having no luck finding the 30x48x14.

Anyone know where I can get them, maybe even local?

If you don't mind paying out the nose, Canada Bearing might be able to help you. They've got a bunch of catalogs and distributors they can search through.

Is this for your VFR? Does Honda not have them?

I found that alot of steering head bearings arn't standard sizes. The Steering head bearings for my ZX7RR for example was a limited production by Koyo or NSK or something.

That whole massive thing inside the steering head is the bearing race!!!! Pictured next to it is a convetional race out of a ZX7R. If my steering head bearings get worn out I'd have to ebay NOS parts at like $100 a bearing when/if they come up! Or make a spacer for the steering head to use conventional/readily available tapered bearings.

Good luck with your search.

Wow!

Nah, this is for my project bike. 78 Suzuki GS750, fitting an 04 GSXR1000 front end.

Ah... sometimes the combo you want simply doesn't exist (not saying it doesn't in this case) so what you may need to do is make a custom steering stem that presses into the GSXR1000 bottom triple but is the appropriate diameter to use stock GS750 bearings. Plenty of machine shops should be able to make you a custom stem.

I've used Rob Barnes at GP Engineering before.

He doesn't maintain a website but his work is good and his prices are fair.

Although unlikely, if the portion of the GS750 stem that presses into the triple is larger than the GSXR1000, you can mod the GS750 stem and press it into the GSXR1000 bottom.

I know machining sounds like a bit of a pain but in the end it may be easier and cheaper if the bearings are a truly rare or custom size.

That is true, if this place does not check out I will give em a call:

Anyone ever use em before?

Btw:

GS750:
Top: 25 id 48 od 13 width
Bottom: 27 id 48 od 14 width

GSXR1000 UPPER:
30 mm inner diameter,
55 mm outer race diameter,
17 mm height

GSXR1000 LOWER:
30 mm inner diameter
55 mm outer diameter
17 mm height

Before I did my front end swap (YZF600R on 86 VFR) I checked to make sure the bearings I needed existed. If they didn't I was prepared to use the VFR's steering stem in the new front end.

If you can't find the bearings you need, pressing in and welding the original stem may be your only option.
Good luck on the bearing hunt.
