They'll occasionally tranquilize them in the tree and try to get them to drop onto a trampoline or air bag.
When my parents were building their house in the late 70's a decent sized bear walked past the living room window. Dad went to town and bought a box of slugs just in case. It was almost 40 years before another bear walked past (and it wandered away so no need for the slugs).
EDIT:
Tranquilized and relocated. I am never entirely trusting of "relocated". I suspect much of the time that means killed away from eyes as relocation isn't as simple as physically moving the animal and they enjoy their new home.

They are at least pretending to relocate this one. One of those articles says it will be released into the wild.
Near the in-laws cottage, the beavers that destroy the road are being trapped and "relocated" for $500 each. Like hell the trapper is live trapping a beaver and relocating it. My money is on it being relocated to a freezer/drying board.
Black bears are afraid of people, -- trees kill more people than bears in Ontario.
The problem with bears in urban areas is the same you have with racoon, they are destructive and a nuisance to property owners.
A few years ago a little bear wandered into my yard in Markham. It was being followed by the YRP SWAT team of Ninjas hopping over fences, dropping and doing some funky elbow and knee crawling. About 40 cops cars secured the neighbourhood, eventually the MNR transfer the little guy.
At my place in Porcupine, bears wander into the neighbourhood all the time -- not unusual for me to hit a bear turd when cutting the grass. Nobody gets drooled whe a bear is checking out a trash bin, we just ring up old Florence, shec old lady shoos bears away from the street with her broom and whiskey breath.
It was a small young bear , no mom in sight . As people keep putting compost buckets and recycling out the night before collection , customers will show up for dinner .
While discussing gun legislation a friend commented that bears are often seen around his cottage so he keeps a 22 handy. Fortunately he's never had to use it or seen the possible consequences of a retaliation. A starter pistol would be a better idea.

Don’t discuss gun legislation with somebody that dopey . It’s illegal to shoot a bear with a .22 . There is also the shooting an animal ‘out of season’ , even if it’s trying to get into a cottage . His fines would be in the thousands .

You can shoot a bear, or any animal that is damaging your property providing you can discharge a firearm where you live, and have PAL. Just report the kill to MNR and be sure you can prove the animal was doing property damage.
I don't think there are calibre restriction on hunting bear in Ontario. An expert hunter could dispatch a black bear with a 22, a scared cottage owner... unlikely.
If a bear is causing problems and all you have is a 22, shoot it into the air, not at the bear.
I caught one on my security cam a couple of nights ago at my place up north. No firearms discharge in Porcupine.
You can only shoot bear/ deer/ moose with a center fire cartridge . Yes there is a .22 centre fire round , Winchester introduced it in the 1880s , it’s been out of production for years .
I assumed cottage buddy had a .22RF like the other 100,000 cottagers. Could be he has the right tool .

What you shoot depends on what you're doing. Hunting, yes, centerfire only.
Defending your property is different, it falls under Fish and Wildlife Conservation rules. You cant be cruel, but you can dispatch a nuisance bear humanely. Using a .22 requires the hunting and marksmanship to deliver a perfect kill shot.
