License Plate Transfer - Old Bike to New Bike

Hi Guys,
I tried to skim through the threads here but didn't find one that answers my question....

So I sold my bike on Monday. Took the plates off and kept the plate portion on the Ownership.
I am buying a new bike today from a Private sale. Will be picking up the bike tonight and will need to ride it home. (About a 45 minute ride).

Can I use my current plates temporarily on the new bike and register them to the new bike tomorrow when MTO offices open?

If not, do I have any other options?

I read somewhere on the net that I have 6 days from the sale of the bike to use the plate on a new bike, but it wasn't a ministry website, so I'm not a 100% sure if it's reliable info.

Anyone have any input on this?
All your help would be much appreciated!

The proper way to do this would be to go to the ministry and have them switch the plate number to 'un-attached" on the ownership and then legally you could use them on your new bike temporarily. I cant remember exactly what the "temporarily" time is though.

No that is incorrect you must have the plate registered on the new bike in order to use it and that also means you muyst have insurance on the new bike. Otherwise you can get a temporary permit to transport it but in order to get that you must prove to the ministry the new bike is insured.

I have already transfered my Insurance over to the new bike. I have a Temorary Insurance Slip for new bike.

But I don't have the ownership of the new bike yet. So how do I transfer the plates to the new bike??

Improper or invalid number plates and cab cards
Improper number plate
14. (1) Where a police officer or an officer appointed under this Act has reason to believe that,
(a) a number plate attached to a motor vehicle or trailer,

(i) has not been authorized under this Act for use on that vehicle,
(ii) was obtained by false pretences, or
(iii) has been defaced or altered;

(b) evidence of validation of a permit displayed on a motor vehicle,

(i) was not furnished under this Act in respect of that motor vehicle,

(ii) was obtained by false pretences, or

(iii) has been defaced or altered; or

(c) a permit carried by a driver of a motor vehicle,

(i) was not authorized under this Act in respect of that motor vehicle,

(ii) was obtained by false pretences, or

(iii) has been defaced or altered,

Which is why it has be listed "un-attached". Insurance is a must obviously. If you don't believe me then look at the middle/top right corner of the plate portion of your ownership it should currently read "attached". I personally have done this numerous times and had been advised by both Provincial and Regional LEO as this being the correct way to do it. I just called one of those sources and you have 6 days to transfer all documents to your name and vehicle.

Ahh okay.
So if I buy the bike tonight, I still need to have "un-attached" license plate... I can't use the "6 days"?

I was really hoping I would be covered under....

Registration

Your vehicle permit must accurately describe your vehicle. If a change is made to your vehicle, you must report it at a Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office within six days.

But I guess not.... Will need to make an MTO run now. Any idea if it costs anything?

^that's the ownership for the vehicle. An example would be if you painted the vehicle a completely different color then you would have 6 days to change the color on the ownership. Or in your case change the owner on the ownership. Technically you have two different ownerships one for the vehicle and one for the plate.

Got it...
Hummm, i was really hoping to go to MTO only once, but I guess that's not going to be possible.

Thanks for clarifying that for me though! I appreciate it!

The only problem is not all cops know this it's kinda a grey area. Easy to win in court. The simplest thing to do would be get your own insurance on the bike and then have the guy you are purchasing the bike leave the plates on for you to get it home. Then you can either return them personally or ship them back to him.

Yeah what I was thinking of doing was asking him to deliver the bike to me and I would drop him home after.
Would take a bit of his time, but doesn't hurt to ask right?

I've done that a few times, it's straight forward enough so long as you give him a ride back. Best option.
