License plate question

Hey everyone,
Maybe one of you can help clear up my question. I will be purchasing a new (to me) bike, and taking delivery and registering the motorcycle on Saturday. I also already own a motorcycle, and am in the process of selling it.

I want to keep my current license plate on my current bike, in case I need to deliver it to a shop/take it to get safetied. Can I purchase a temporary plate for my new bike so that I can ride it home on Saturday, and then transfer my current plate to it once my current bike has been sold? I know to get a temporary plate sticker, you need to have a safety cert (which I will have). Can I then "re-use" this safety cert to transfer my current plate onto the new bike later (within the 35 days it is valid).

Also, a search of the MTO website only describes a temporary plate sticker. Is this the same as a temporary plate, and that I will be able to ride my new bike home with it? Or is it merely just a sticker, and I need a plate for it to go on?

I hope my question makes sense... Thanks in advance for any help!

Call your insurance and tell them youre buying a new bike. Theyll then temporarily insure the said bike for you. You then use the plate on your current bike to ride the said bought bike home because, iirc, you have 5 days grace to ride it home from the date of purchase and not have to have the papers under your name.

So if a cop pulls you over, you show the bill of sale/uvip/ownership with your insurance paper stating theyll be insuring the said bike from the month of xx-xx

I don't think insurance companies issue "temporary policies" any more. It will be a full year policy that you can later cancel if you choose to but you may end up owing some money. They will also often ask for an ownership within 24h or up front even. So it may be somewhat difficult to insure unless you have a good relationship with them.

There's no such thing as temporary plates either. Technically you could use old plates from your previous vehicle but the new (used) one would have to be safetied first and the original vehicle sold.

New plates are cheap, however.

Safety is valid for 36 days, and it has nothing to do with vehicle being plated. You can have a fit status without a plate.

So as described, no, you cannot officially follow through with your plan.

HTA 11(3)Temporary Use of Plates
- a person to whom number plates have been issued for a vehicle that the person no longer owns or leases may affix the number plates to a similiar vehicle

HTA 11(4) Excemption to Temporary Use of Plates
- allowed up to 6 days on becoming the owner
- carry vehicle portion and transfer application signed by both the person named on the permit and NEW owner (back of permit)
- carry plate portion of permit which matches plate, which will match name of new owner
- plus for a USED motor vehicle, carry a safety standards certificate valid within 36days

Thanks for the replies guys. I just got off the phone with my insurance company and will just have two bikes on the policy. I'll cancel the coverage for the old bike when it gets sold; there will be no penalty since I will still have a policy for my new bike and the insurance is pro-rated so that's fine.

I'd like to not have to purchase a new set of plates, so I'll ask the person at the MTO counter when I go in and register my vehicle. If they say I can't get a "temporary plate" then I will just bite the bullet and buy a second set of plates, and return them when I sell my current bike.

Thanks for the input!

It's only one plate and it's 23 bucks. Temp sticker is 10 dollars. Like I said - no such thing as temp plates. So you will have to replate the vehicle at your cost later on. If you still have a valid sticker on your old plate, it can be refunded on a pro rated basis. Keep in mind it's only out of $42 total, minus some admin fee.

You are correct! I ended up buying a second set of plates and leaving my old bike as is. Temp sticker is only good for 10 days so I just ended up buying the full year for the sticker.

Thanks for everyone's input!
