License plate positioning / Relocating

I did a search as well as googled for about an hour...

I am looking to relocate my plate on my R6. I want to get an interrogated tail light and move the plate to under the rear seat by the shock. Is this legal? Has anyone else had a problem with this?

The pic is not the greatest but hope you get the picture. (no pun intended)

Thanks in advance..

It is not legal but you'll most likely be ok most of time. You might get some flak for it.

One caution on the positioning. make sure there is sufficient clearance between the bottom edge of your plate and your tire. ..
seen too many plates deformed because of 'wheel rub'.

Chances are you will get interrogated! ;)
Just after lunch today I saw a guy in a old blue cadillac pulled over for a obstructed plate (blue tinted plate cover).

Don't do it. Not worth the hassle. Why create another reason for a cop to pull you over?

Plenty of existing threads about this.

I liked the look of the before picture but my tire kept on rubbing the plate and eventually the bracket broke. Also I'm way more legit.

Is it legal? Depends who you ask, but the most widely interpreted explanation in the HTA is no.

Will you get hassled? Probably, yes.

Just like everything else, there are people that know what they are talking about, and the people that don't.

Gambit, while I respect both your qualifications and your opinions, it always comes down to the cop. I have my plate mounted in an illegal fashion on my SV, but I've never had a ticket despite being pulled over a couple times. Not even a warning. If I was riding a GSXR I bet that would be different.

A cop's selective enforcement isn't the same as whether something is illegal. Thats all I am saying.

Clearly neither I, or anyone else would be able to give a definitive answer to the question "will I get a ticket"? that is very different than "is it illegal".

Jamie posted a link to a rather full discussion on the issue, which includes several quoted sections of the HTA and links to the applicable law.

Coles Notes: Illegal because it would appear to be almost completely obscured, to the rear, by the hugger and the rear wheel. The bike also lacks a mudguard, which is required under the HTA.

I thought there was also something in CMVSS that said the plate had to be mounted on the rearward part of the vehicle? I searched and searched but couldn't find it :(

You aren't going to get a ticket for contravening CVMSS and it's unlikely that a regular patrol officer would have a clue as to its contents.

One of the people on my big 507 police ride got a ticket for "inadequate reflectors" for removing the reflectors from his rear fender (as well as no mud flap and numerous other tickets, signals too close together, etc.) which I thought was a CVMSS thing, so that's why I thought police were aware of it and/or could ticket for it? I know they can write tickets for HTA and EPA (friend just got EPA ticket :() but didn't know how they handle CVMSS.

Interesting. Certainly sounds like it. Sounds like that person got a whopping bunch of, "Do you want fries with that?" tickets. I would be interested in hearing the sections charged under, if you could find out. I'm guessing CMVSS 108.

13 bikes got tickets, 26 tickets in total. Was not a good day :(
