Licence Aquisition (Borrowing / Renting a bike)

I'm looking at getting my M before the season is out.

I'm from the UK and been riding since 2007 and had my licence history recorded byt the MTO when I swapped my licence for a G. So once I pass the knowledge test I'm good to go and take the full M.

I was looking at doing it via the route of a safety course with Durham Colledge. However you need to provide the bike. Are there any option where I can rent a bike or are there any safety course providers out there in the Oshawa / Whitby area that would supply a bike.

I'm not too sure I want the initial expense of the bike purchase / insurance at the minute but it would be nice to obtain the licence.

Try kijiji there's some people renting out on there for a fee...legality aside it'll get you a bike for the test.

Like mimico said, try kijiji if you want to rent a CBR125 or Ninja 250 for the test but i doubt its "legal".

If you want it 100% legal, the only place i know that rents bikes is GTA Exotics, might want to search for reviews on here first though.

I'm not really interested in the Kijiji route if legality could be an issue.

I doubt any company would hire to an M1 holder. It's a shame I cant find a local safety course which would supply a bike.

JUst trying to find the best compromise for my needs an a first year insurance cost which I can stomach.

Trouble is i'm used to the power of an R6 and over here that is simply out of the question for me at this stage. Looking more like a CBR 250.

Thanks for the responses.

The whole legality issues comes into play should something happen and insurance gets involved. Basically they'd say you're test riding or borrowing the bike instead of renting. Their *** gets in trouble more than yours as you can claim ignorance and they ran as a business etc etc...
most of the weekend courses that are run by the schools supply bikes for that so that's always an option. Thats your best bet for getting a bike and your license quickly.

How tall are you? Do you have a date booked for your course/test? I'm in Whitby and you could borrow my R6S or R1 no problem. You buy whatever you scratch/break.

Jamie

I'm just under 6ft. My bike in the UK was a 2004 R6 then after I sold that I had a Suzuki RF600R for a short time.
I haven't got anything booked as yet as I was looking into the best option to do it.

I popped down to GP bikes yesterday just to get an angle on what I would be spending to purchase. They had a couple of Suzuki Katana 600's which could be an option or a Kwak KLR 650 as I'm also contemplating looking at more the dual sport side of things.

So how would the insurance stand as I would be borrowing as an M1 rider only?

No probs, when you're ready you're welcome to my R1, it's much easier to handle than my R6S.

You will be covered under my insurance. If you got into a traffic accident and were charged by the police, the ticket would remain on your record but the insurance claim would go on my record.

It is fully legal for you to borrow my bike and get covered by my insurance BECAUSE I'M NOT RENTING IT TO YOU.

You require NO insurance policy of your own, to ride and be covered while on my bike.

Make sure when you borrow it I remember to give you the ownership and insurance, as I don't keep them in the bike.

Good on you. Most people get mad when someone stands near their bike, let alone lend it out to a stranger. If you're a Buddhist, good karma is coming your way....hopefully.

I've asked to borrow peoples bikes on here when my friends wanted to try out some bikes to see what they liked, CBR 125's, Ninja 250's, etc., and never had an issue with people lending me their bikes. So I figured I better return the favour when possible :)

This is an awesome offer and I really appreciate it Jamie.

I'm still trying to figure out the best solution for me. Will peak to work tomorrow and see about getting a couple of hours off one morning to get the knowledge test out the way.

As for lending things out not quite lending a bike but a stranger off a bike forum ended up being my lodger for a while and when posting ideas for a trip around Scotland a guy offered me a room in Edinburgh and gave me a bit of a tour the following day.

There are a lot of good people out there :)

I'd lend you my gs500f but since it's on the east end it would probably be easier to borrow TAFB's, he's closer.

Also: were you at GP in the morning? (around 10amish?)

Make sure you know all our goofy road signs, blue lights are snow plows, how four way stops work, etc. The M1 test is 93% car/road/signs knowledge and nothing to do with bikes :(

Good luck :)

And, if you wanted to skip the Durham College course and just do the M1 exit test I could take you on the M1 exit test course at the Oshawa test center and show you everything you'd need to know to get 100% ;)

I'm assuming you have to do M1 -> M2 -> M even though you could theoretically do all three tests in the same day right? That's how it worked for me when I let me M2 expire ;)

I just literally have to do knowledge and eye sight and then M2exit test. You can skip all the middle bit.

This is what applies in my case. They already have my licence history recorded.

If you are a licensed motorcycle or moped driver from a country other than Canada, the United States or Switzerland, you must pass a vision test and a written test of your knowledge of motorcycles and the rules of the road. You must also pass a written test of your knowledge of traffic signs. If you have acceptable proof of two or more years of driving experience, you may take the Level Two road test to earn full driving privileges. If you do not pass this road test, you will get a Level One licence and may immediately schedule a Level One road test.

No it was a bit later as I was working till 12. Probably about 12:30ish

The wording from that is very confusing. From that description it sounds like you won't get ANY license until "you take the Level Two road test". It's only if you fail the Level 2 road test that you get an M1 license (or is it M2?)?!

Or are you just going to write your M1 test ahead of time? If you are planning to do that, I would just double check with the ministry that you obtaining an M1 license doesn't affect your waiting period or ability to go straight to M by bypassing the M2 stage.

If you can just write your M1 test now and get an M1 then do the M2 exit course at Durham for your full M that would be sweet :)
