Lest We Forget

Well done Jonathon.

And Lest we Forget .

My dad , father in law and Grandfather all served in WW2 and all came home. My Great grandfather was WW1 , came home but died by suicide in 1922 . PSTD was then called shell shock and you were expected to just get over it . I lost an uncle I obviously never knew in WW2 . Dig back far enough and the tens of thousands that died were somebody’s family . RIP

From an old high school friend -

On Remembrance Day I thought I'd share some Family history. My grand father on my dad's side fought in WW1 and was in 2 of the worst battles Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele and luckily survived them both as so many sadly didn't , he rejoined in WW11 but was to old to get into battle he became a guard at prisoner of war camps in the Maritimes and in England.
My dad joined because in his words it was the right thing to do. He had basic training in the Maritimes then off to England his regiment was training everyday for a battle they didn't know about until months later D-Day , my dad was in the first boats landing on Normandy ,he had 35lbs of TNT on his back to blow up the German concrete bunkers , he fought through Europe up to Holland where they cleared the Germans out , 2 weeks before the end dad was wounded by a mortar shell it also killed his best friend he had meet when he joined up that was a great loss to my dad. Years later when he returned for the 50th anniversary those left in his regiment went to a town in Holland they had helped ,the people had them stay in their homes and treated them like the hero's they were, they had a big parade and little children came out and gave them flowers and thanked them my dad cried. He spent the last years of his life with mild dementia living at Sunnybrook's Veteran's residence , while there a NFB crew was making a documentary om the 50 men & women that were 100 years old or older ,they were impressed with my dads interview and made it the the introduction to the interviews it's on Sunnybrook you tube channel , they also have a monument in front of the residence to my dad.
This is a interview of the 43-50 veterans who are over 100 years old living in Sunnybrook ,they choose dads interview to be the first ,I'm extremely proud of him

I grew up in a military family and most of the neighborhood was military, NS. i could tell you some stories from the old soldiers that would rip your heart out. I have never missed a remembrance day gathering in over 50yrs

And apparently a High School near Ottawa played ONE song at the Remembrance Day assembly . A song in Arabic about Palestinian Gaza . Played it 3 times. The Principal says it’s a peace song , the Jewish students said it was a bit confusing. School board says Principal says sorry so it’s all good now .
How do these guys get jobs running schools ? You could mess up a lot of stuff but this one is a bit offensive for Nov 11th

My kids school put up slides with the names of family members that are serving. I liked that.
