I'm glad they all came home, my Father in law and my Dad did, they left some uncles and cousins in Europe.

Thanks for sharing.

Although it's becoming increasingly difficult due to attrition, when it's time to buy a poppy I find a Vet who's selling them as opposed to the cadets so I can thank him personally. Veteran's Affairs may treat them like chattel, but I'll be damned if I'm going to.

I wish my Grand daddy fought a great war. I would've been proud. My grand dad said he was a kid at that time.

I haven't found a family member who experienced WWII. I love war stories!

The stories are cool, but your very lucky if none of your family was involved, my great grandfather was with the WW1 british cavalry, yeah horses in the trenches and came home VERY mentally messed up with what he was exposed to. My Father-in-law was WW2 in the North Atlantic doing escort work for the fleets on leaky corvettes , my Dad was in the channel and Baltic getting chased around by much better German cruisers.
Not everybody that went had a good time.

My dad was in the war, he came home but most of his friends didn't. and he had nightmares till the day he died.

My granddad served and he's very fortunately still alive - going to be 90 this month.

He was in the 12th Manitoba Dragoons. And wouldn't you know it, he signed up so he could ride motorcycles! He was on Nortons riding dispatch, but that didn't last long as he was transferred to a gunner's job in Staghounds (a type of armoured scout car).

By all accounts he had more good experiences than bad, but he was fortunate enough to not have seen much action. He's very much a "Don't congratulate me because I didn't do anything" type. Luckily I can still call and wish him happy birthday :)

Hey, they suffered so I don't have to. I'm greatful for that :D

Problem with all of this remembrance day stuff, is that they have one day of recognition, where kids, teenagers and adults look at seniors and give them that nod of respect. Once the day is done it's back to the same mentality. Not even the government gives a **** about the vets anymore. Not a fan of the days like these, where everyone just jumps on the boat about remembering and giving thanks, then it's all over. If you respect a Vet, always respect a Vet, and do whatever you can to show that appreciation, not just on one damn day.

Exactly.

I have no problems walking the walk.

I had a neighbour back in the late 80s that was a WW I vet. Used to sit on his stoop and chat while our dogs wandered around doing dog stuff in the front yard. The stories he had from France were mortifying. Shoveled his walk every time I shoveled mine (grass was cut by a service). One day I went over and he was sitting on his porch crying. Said VA cut some benefits from his pension, he wouldn't be able to afford his expenses, and his daughter couldn't/wouldn't take him in. Found out what brand of food his dog ate and went and bought 2 cases just so he wouldn't have to worry about that (I was just getting my finances back on track after being off for 8 months when I got hit by a car on my bike). Called our MP and explained the situation and asked if he could help. Don't know what our MP did, and I never asked, but a week later he was all happy again as VA had reversed their decision.

Be very very thankful.

The only thing "fun" about war stories is that you weren't in them, otherwise, war is as brutal and gut wrenching as it gets.

I guess I find it intriguing because it brings out the best in people & also the worst
