...or any other language for that matter...

I've been doing the Rosetta Stone thing, and while they make it extremely simple, I don't think you can really become fluent just from the program. I could see myself becoming fluent after doing Rosetta Stone twice, and then moving to France for a year.

With no one around me day to day that I can converse with in French, I doubt I'll ever become fluent...

Have you learned a new language recently? Any tips/tricks?

Merci beaucoup

unfortunately, I've come across the same problem. The reality (for me) is that nothing beats immersion. I picked Italian much quicker being in Italy than I ever did here.

The best substitution I've found is to watch sourced material. For example, I usually watch Italian News (from Italy, not here) and read Italian websites. With a motorcycle twist, I read gpone.com. Alas, as I said, nothing beats immersion.

When your survival depends on it, you'll learn it and you'll learn it fast.

It's very sad that more people in Canada do not speak French, especially those of us that went through the school system as youths. I took French from Grade 1 through 10 and I can't string a sentence together to save my ***. I know I am not alone, hundreds of thousands of us took this program and how many actually speak French? Why did we spend all that bloody time on the verbs and nouns and Pitoo the petite chien.

Why not teach conversational languages in schools?
