The Leafs management did something today that inside hockey is considered a dick move… they stripped an incumbent captain of his C.

You could argue it was necessary given Tavares was the captain for 5 years that all ended in playoff sadness.

But it’s still a dick move. It’s something that’s rarely done, and when it is done it’s after the captain himself compromised the role and lost respect of his team. Matthew’s is certainly worthy, but there is evidence of that with John T. had lost the room.

Depends on how they handle it.
Press conference with both JT and AM present and JT gives his support to AM, maybe it’s not as awkward and cringey as it would appear at first glance?

JT is a pro he’ll take it for the team but I can assure you he not happy and it’s gonna hurt.

He won’t show it.
 
I dont know......to me, a captain is the one that steps up and makes a difference when things are not going good. I dont recall Mathews ever doing that. Tavares used to but doesnt seem to be able to anymore. McDavid can do that with his talent. Mathews has yet to do that, IMO. Are they trying to get him to step things up? Maybe.

But I agree, a dick move by management. If Tavares had stepped down, that would be different.
 
I saw an opinion that suspected Johnny T will be gone at the end of his contract (summer 2025). This was the first step in that process. You can't trade your captain. That seemed reasonable to me.
 
Dick move, it probably was done for good reason but still a dick move.
The press conference was a PR move and of course JT was told to bite his tonge and be supportive of the change.

I'm sure he is punching the wall when he can.

Wouldn't be surprised if he gone by the end of the year.
 
Abundance of youngn's coming up.
They need someone to look up to.
AM, clearly gets the edge.
 
Typical Leafs propaganda nonsense. They do noting major all summer to help improve the team. But they do craplike this to keep people interested in them . I don't see Mathews any better than JT as a leader. I have yet to see him step up in the playoffs and become that changing factor that helps a team make it to the next round. Hes a great scorer but not a leader or any more than JT.
This is the first step of trying to force a trade for JT. Start to make his life uncomfortable here so he leaves on his terms since he has a no trade contract.
They should be doing the same with Marner. Personally out of the 4 golden contracts. The only only one that does much in the playoffs is Nylander.,
