Are these bikes for sale anywhere in canada?
09+ used would be best but i cant find one anywhere... hell cant even find a new one

Parker Brothers and GP Bikes both have KTMs. GP Bikes would also have the Triumph.

One thing: they're COOMMMPLETELY different bikes. Apples and oranges.

i read that ktms need a valve job every 10k? is that true? that sux!!! for the triumph it's every 24k or something like that.

False. KTM recommends that valve clearance be checked every 7500km. I can tell you from experience that it will not need an adjustment until 15k or well beyond, depending on how you ride. Furthermore, it's a single cylinder and a very basic engine. Working on it is relatively easy, and you're checking the valves of one cylinder as opposed to 3 or 4 in other bikes.

The two bikes are completely different. The Street Triple is a regular naked bike... full weight, a big revvy engine, comfortable highway tourer, etc etc. The 690 KTM is a single cylinder 330lbs bike much more akin to a supermoto than a sportbike. It's a hooligan bike for around town, and incredibly fun at that. The 690 makes ~65hp. The Street Triple makes over 100.

how much does it cost for a shop to check it? if i have a ktm i would check it myself but i've never done it before so what are the odds of messing up the bike doing it?

I'm not sure what a shop would charge. Probably half of what they'd charge to check the valves on any other bike. The motor is easier to get to, and like I said before it's only one cylinder.

If you're mechanically inclined there's no reason why you'd mess anything up when doing a clearance check. When checking the valves you're not disassembling anything of importance, so if you can get access to them and then remember how to put everything back together, you're fine.

If you are any way mechanically incline it should be easy for you. Quite a few DIY write ups on the LC4 on supermoto forums (690 SMC same engine) doing the first check at 6200 miles (10K KMS) and still within .001"

This engine is very easy to work on.

Also, mmmnaked was exactly right about how different the two bikes are. The 690 is more like Ducati 769 Hypermoto (the bike I tested when comparing them along with the Aprilia SXV 550) than anything else. Short distance hooligan bike with no top end but hard hitting low-mid end thump. Bad choice for distance riding.

The Striple is basically a naked Daytona with a mid-high end power delivery. Way better choice for distance but not long distance.

The used market on such bikes is almost non-existent in Ontario or Canada, because they are sold in tens rather than hundreds a year. At some point it was impossible to even get KTM690 SM, even if you paid over MSRP ... which is quite high to start with. Speed Triple should be easier to get used.

It would appear that you can't buy a new Duke 690 anymore. Parker Bros & GP don't list the bike at all. Finding one used is also very hard. In the last two years, I have seen only a couple of ads for used ones in the GTA.

Speaking of duke's, what happened to the Duke 125?

So far it looks like it's only target markets will be Asia and Europe.

Other version available...... 125 stunt.

If I was a newb I'd waaaaay rather ride that KTM than a small Ninja or CBR125...

It is a shame. I think the 125 duke is the ultimate small cc street bike. It looks pimp and the ergonomics should make it more comfy and manageable over both the 250r or cbr.

And yeah, on KTM's site the duke / superduke are no longer available in Canada. Bummer.

Yeah just spoke to someone in the know, no Super Dukes have come in since 08. Wasnt sure about the 690s though, Im pretty sure they were still coming until 2010.

the 690 Duke/690 SM is one of my dream bikes. I am currently riding the bigger brother to them, but wish I could have one of the singles...however it doesn't lend itself well to mileage.
The 690 motor is the most powerful single ever mass produced, and is tuned like a racebike. Superlight flywheel, and highly strung, make it very easy to stall in traffic, and finicky to say the least. But take it to someplace like Delas Gap and it would be untouchable- And I want one!! Did I mention that? LOL

If anyone is interested Apex just brought a 690 Duke back out onto the showroom floor that was sold but the buyer couldnt get financing or something to that effect. Could be one of the last new ones available.......

LOL at 15k you will replace your rocker rollers as preventive maintenance. Mine seized at 20k and ate the camshaft. As a perk I got to upgrade to the rally cam :) 5000 checks is more realistic. The engine is beautiful in it's simplicity. Very easy to work on. I can pull the camshaft out in under two hours.

On the other hand I have been riding a SMC for the past two months and it is amazing. From commuting to 2000K trips it's awesome, if you change the seat. The vibrations are nowhere near as bad as some say.
