So, I'm going to do the Cabot trail this year, first big trip for me. I'm hoping some of the KLR owners out there might have not only some advice on gear for the bike, but I'm also looking for some used bits for sale. Just going through a divorce, so budget is priority. I'm looking for a sargeant seat, possibly hard bags, and a taller windshield. The bike (2008) has all the mechanical upgrades done, so thankfully I'm good there. Also, anyone have any experience with the crash guards? I have a set, but they vibrate badly at certain rpms, and I can't stand the thought of a trip with them on, lol. Shoot me a PM if you can help out!

You can do that trip on a moped, it just takes a week bit of practice with the packing.

What year is the bike? 2000?

It's an 08, I have no idea why I got an emoticon in that post, lol

First off, get a throttle rocker or cramp buster or similar.

Second, add tire irons, a patch kit and co2 or a pump to your tool kit as well as chain lube and a tube of loctite.

For luggage you can get some pvc vinyl canoe bags at MEC, Bass PRO or similar along with bungee cords and rope, you can bungee then cross ways on the back and that will give you 70litres of storage or more. I have a Giving topbox, and have done a 7 day trip with just the contents of the top box, and believe me, a light bike is superior to a heavy one. Weight will be key for good handling.

That being said, make sure you pack three season gear as it gets darn cold out there at night, even in the middle of summer.

What have you got, Givi crash bars?

Check my blog for route suggestions, I've gone East a number of times on the KLR and only lost one Supertrapp while doing it. ;)

Oh, you may want a "go cruise" throttle lock for the boring highway bits.

Bring zip ties and duct tape....have fun.
