Kawi Grom fighter headed to the US.....hopefully Canada too!

Wouldn't that be a lateral move? What can the Grom/Z125 "Pro" do that the Sachs can't? One thing you've already got is that nothing else on the road looks like a Sachs

The Grom has been updated visually for 2016-17 and looks better to me. Keep thinking I want one, but the height is a real concern. In a city where drivers somehow manage to not notice garbage trucks, street cars and fire fighters, I'm not sure how visible a Grom would be. Actually witnessed someone try to make a left in front of a rushing fire engine yesterday, a new low in a city of lows.

Any owners on the board? Curious to know what their experience is concerning near misses.

So Kawasaki is bringing their Z125 pro to the USA! Finally some competition in the monkey bike category! I currently have a Sachs Madass in the garage but have a feeling either a Grom or Z125 is in my future. These little bikes are tons of fun and offer the most smiles per $ spent out of any bike I've ridden.

What do you think of the Madass? Something like that would be great to go back and forth to work on. It would be allowed in the bicycle parking lock-up in our building so parking would be free. Have you used it for commuting?

I loved the 500cc concept with the Royal Enfield engine. Its a pity they didn't make it.

If a Toronto driver cannot see a firetruck, street car or garbage truck, then no bike or car, sub-compact, luxury or SUV, would make a visual difference. While the Grom looks small compared to a Ninja 300, both are rounding errors compared to a firetruck.

The Grom is small, but so is a Smart car.

True, true. Hyperbole and hysteria are the salt n' pepper of the internet, so a glass of water is sometimes called for instead of refilling the shakers. What's the skinny, Grommers? Are these mini-motos merely just as risky as the average bike? Accidents stats by model might help, though I suspect even that might be unreliable evidence, like the reputation of a gixxer.

I haven't commuted on the MadAss as my commute is 85km one way from Peterborough to Whitby every day! I do ride it around town and even out of town here and haven't had many complaints. It vibrates a lot through the pegs, the suspension is harsh and divey, and at higher speeds it sounds like it's going to blow up, but it is a blast to ride! Because the fuel is hidden in the frame, you don't have a tank between your knees like you do on a Grom. You basically feel like you're riding your old banana seat bike down the road at 75km/hr! It will top out at 93km/hr on a flat. It cruises comfortably at 75km/hr but at 85km/hr it sounds like it is working pretty damn hard. It does get a lot of attention everywhere I go on it. People constantly come up to it and ask what it is and want to know all about it. A lot of guys who used to have monkey bikes back in the day recognize the motor and start telling their old stories of their ct90's etc. I also get a lot of attention from the DUI/E-bike crowd. They always think it's really cool and are blown away by how fast it is but lose interest immediately when the find out it requires a license and insurance!

Swapping the MadAss for a Grom or a Z125 isn't a lateral move, it is definitely an improvement. The MadAss is a Chinese motor and I'm always a little leery of the quality/reliability. It isn't holding a charge, so I'm fairly certain it needs a stater and rectifier as well as a battery. Given that it only has 1000km on it, that kind of blows. Parts are cheap on line and can be delivered to your door, but if you buy the Honda or the Kawi, you don't need to worry about any of that because you have the Japanese bullet-proof build quality. The Grom has a little more top end (105km/h once broken in) and isn't revving as high when cruising at 80-85km/h compared to the MadAss. The aftermarket for the Grom is HUGE and the online support/knowledge from the Grom community is impressive. The Grom has a really devoted cult following. The Grom and Z might not have the cool kickstart of the MadAss, but they do have FI and much better gauges with tachs, fuel gauge, etc. and you can literally swap out any part on the Grom with a higher spec/better performing one. Everything from way better suspension, to tires, breaks, to luggage options and even direct bolt in big bore kits. Lots of guys stretch them and lower them and really get into customizing them.

I have baby #2 on the way (due the end of April) and find I'm not riding much the last few years. If I have as much fun on the MadAss this season as I did last season and I keep riding my Bandit as little as I have been since baby #1 came along, I might sell them both and buy a new Grom or Z125. Either one keeps me riding and able to blow off some steam and even have some hooligan fun without much worry of speeding tickets etc and then when the babies are older and think I'm lame and don't want to spend time with me I'll get back into riding bigger bikes and touring.

Maybe won't fall apart?

That said, if you're asking a nice price for the MadAss I'm kind of interested.

Interesting. Sensible ergos and tubular handlebars suggest torque bias and reasonable insurance premiums. An ideal commuting tool from your tree house to the minuiture golf course. Lucky charms green in colour. Nice.

Spec sheets between z and grom are nearly identical especially where the engine is concerned. Z has slightly taller seat height and an extra 1.9L of fuel which is a big difference on a bike that is super frugal on gas. That being said i'm sure on either bike you'd want to stop for a stretch long before you'd need a fill up. Im digging the green too!

Weird. The video says 100km range. Website says 50-60km with no wind, no stops, warm temps and 175lb rider with no gear. On a 10 hour charge. WTF?

i would love to try one, but not own one.
i just dont think its really benificial against the actual grom or the new z125
with that being said, i also want to try out the grom and z125 but again....no real interest in owning 1.

My girlfriend seems to really like the look of this Kawi. The only bike shes ever showed any interest in trying. I'm going to be buying one of these for sure now, even if its just to get her heels in the door.. I'll keep it at her condo downtown so I can go to Rabba with it.. lol

Funny, my girlfriend was set on a grom as her first bike since she's got a tiny frame. But she's more interested in the Suzuki TU250 now.

So are you saying that 4 of these can fit into a minivan?
Oh boy, new market or thieves on the way.

I did see some Groms downtown, seems to be a good solution for getting around.
Has anyone thought about hooking up an old cellphone as video security that streams to the phone on you.
Might be something to try considering all the functions on these smarphones now.
Sticker, You are on video and live streaming, steal at your own risk.

Just love this bike, great to see it coming to Canada... and great to see some competition to the Honda,,,

Dude.. you can probably fit like 6 of those in a minivan.. lol.. It will all be worth it to get my GF to start riding.. :D The best thing I could come up with for "security" at a condo would be to hide a trail camera somewhere the thieves would never look for it. But realistically what will having video of them do (other than shame them) because I doubt they would get my bike back in 1 piece (if at all).

Why not just buy a minivan and throw the grom in the back when you park it?
I was a little bit interested in that Emmo posted until I read about the 175lbs part. I'd have to cut myself in half. My kid might like it though.
