I haven't commuted on the MadAss as my commute is 85km one way from Peterborough to Whitby every day! I do ride it around town and even out of town here and haven't had many complaints. It vibrates a lot through the pegs, the suspension is harsh and divey, and at higher speeds it sounds like it's going to blow up, but it is a blast to ride! Because the fuel is hidden in the frame, you don't have a tank between your knees like you do on a Grom. You basically feel like you're riding your old banana seat bike down the road at 75km/hr! It will top out at 93km/hr on a flat. It cruises comfortably at 75km/hr but at 85km/hr it sounds like it is working pretty damn hard. It does get a lot of attention everywhere I go on it. People constantly come up to it and ask what it is and want to know all about it. A lot of guys who used to have monkey bikes back in the day recognize the motor and start telling their old stories of their ct90's etc. I also get a lot of attention from the DUI/E-bike crowd. They always think it's really cool and are blown away by how fast it is but lose interest immediately when the find out it requires a license and insurance!
Swapping the MadAss for a Grom or a Z125 isn't a lateral move, it is definitely an improvement. The MadAss is a Chinese motor and I'm always a little leery of the quality/reliability. It isn't holding a charge, so I'm fairly certain it needs a stater and rectifier as well as a battery. Given that it only has 1000km on it, that kind of blows. Parts are cheap on line and can be delivered to your door, but if you buy the Honda or the Kawi, you don't need to worry about any of that because you have the Japanese bullet-proof build quality. The Grom has a little more top end (105km/h once broken in) and isn't revving as high when cruising at 80-85km/h compared to the MadAss. The aftermarket for the Grom is HUGE and the online support/knowledge from the Grom community is impressive. The Grom has a really devoted cult following. The Grom and Z might not have the cool kickstart of the MadAss, but they do have FI and much better gauges with tachs, fuel gauge, etc. and you can literally swap out any part on the Grom with a higher spec/better performing one. Everything from way better suspension, to tires, breaks, to luggage options and even direct bolt in big bore kits. Lots of guys stretch them and lower them and really get into customizing them.
I have baby #2 on the way (due the end of April) and find I'm not riding much the last few years. If I have as much fun on the MadAss this season as I did last season and I keep riding my Bandit as little as I have been since baby #1 came along, I might sell them both and buy a new Grom or Z125. Either one keeps me riding and able to blow off some steam and even have some hooligan fun without much worry of speeding tickets etc and then when the babies are older and think I'm lame and don't want to spend time with me I'll get back into riding bigger bikes and touring.
