Kawasaki 440 LTD maintenance parts and fluid choices?

Hi,

I just picked up an 83 Kawasaki 440LTD as my first bike.

I am going to do all the regular maintenance stuff to make sure it is tip top.

My initial list looks like this and I wouldn't mind a sanity check to make sure I am getting the right stuff.

Oil - Shell T6 Rotella Oil
Oil Filter - Is it worth the extra couple bucks to get a K&N?
Spark Plug
Air Filter - OEM
Front Pads - Vesrah (Open to suggestions)
Rear Pads - Vesrah (Open to suggestions)

I may do a new chain and front and rear sprockets as well just to be on the safe side. Any suggestions for a good chain? Is it worth getting an "O" or "X" chain?

From my poking around part sites... I see that chains can range from $50 to $300 .... so this has me confused.

Same with sprockets.... anything in particular I should look for or stay away from?

The bike does not have a fuel filter from what I can tell so I was thinking of adding a generic in-line filter for protection

Anything else I should be doing?

Don't waste your money on a K&N. Emgo oil filter will be just fine. Look at EBC HH sintered pads for front. Brakes are marginal to begin with so some good pads will help with stopping power. No idea on chain or sprockets, but I think you get what you pay for. Fuel filter sounds like a good idea, will keep rust sediment out of carbs but put it in an easy to get at place in case it plugs quickly.

Depending on km's and history I would look at doing wheel bearings. They tend to be overlooked until they fail. A Clymer manual would help with maintenance and repairs, and it could probably be ordered from Chapters.

O ring chains are head and shoulders above the older chain. The rings lock in lubricant and resist kinking due to rust. They produce less friction and are resistant to stretching or elongating. X ring typically have slightly higher specs.

I have used the ebc hh frequently.
