For those with children in school, here's $200/school aged kid ($250 if special needs) courtesy of DOFO.

Keep the bribes coming DOFO. You won't get my vote...but I need some new LEGOs so chop chop.

This is clearly a bribe and the money should go to fund education, and maybe give some money to the current negotiations instead.

I think EA's are underpaid. Currently asking for >50% over four years. That's in the ballpark of a raise of $100/day for each one in perpetuity. One time payment of $200/kid is a drop in the bucket.

Next they will send everyone $200 to mitigate the failing health care system.
Are we not paying a "health premium" come tax time?
No matter how much cash is thrown at the health system, things do not seem to improve.

As to importing doctors, beware as the certification is not always of the same standard.

Do you think the money is better spent by moms and dads or the edu-bureaucracy?

Look up a CBA for CUPE workers, then compare their wage and benefit program to the private sector. The union blather is $39k average... I can't find a single pay category at less than $41k+ benefits and pension plan. Janitors and secretaries are $59k and $54k respectively, salary alone.

Years of gladhanding PSUs are over, they can no longer expect 25-50% premiums over the private sector.

I agree with you 100% @Mad Mike the money will probably be better spent by me than the govt.

Not sure what I’ll use it for, but Christmas is coming up and kids love Christmas so maybe that would be a worthwhile goal.

I have to chime in here. My daughter works as an EA in the school and as 800over said their wage increases over the last 10 years has been pathetic. Caretakers and teachers are paid 12 months of the year. My daughter has to go on unemployment when school is out for the summer, spring break etc. Her gross pay for 2022 was $42,821.49 not counting UIC benefits. Her net take home pay was $34,050.70 and out of that she had to pay daycare for two kids totaling $17,291.00 which leaves her a whopping take home pay of $16,759.70.

In her job she deals with the autistic and other special needs children and is routinely kicked in the shins or punched in the face or stomach at least twice a week. So yeah, I think she deserves a decent wage so her husband doesn't have to work two jobs anymore to be able to afford the mortgage payment.

Stephen Lecce is making $165,851.00 and he and Dougie dare to say these people do not deserve to be paid a proper living wage. Makes me mad as hell!! I think they'll strike and I don't think they'll give in. They need to be paid for what they do. Anybody here want to get punched in the face a couple of times a week for less than $17k a year?

So, an unskilled janitor in a private sector job earns $18/hr with few if any benefits an no pension. But because one operating a mop in a school funded by taxpayers they deserve $28+/hr ($56k/yr)/ + full benefits + a defined pension plan?
I never wrote that. I am posting that they have had their salary eaten up by inflation....where miniumum wage has increased relative to their positions....but if minimum wage kept up with inflation they should be making $28 an hour. So yes I think that the minimum anyone working ANYWHERE in a full time capacity is well above 40k per year. Why is "someone else is getting taken advantage of" a reasonable reason not to pay someone what they are worth? Minimum wage should be $25 per hour if you expect people to actually live. If you're ok with paying people less than person can live on cool. I'm not. Hey Amazon is willing to pay you less.....so lets pay you less. I do think that i am safe in saying that people taking care of my kids deserve at least less than half of what a cop/firefighter or a teacher/nurse/car salesperson makes.

ANd i guess only one question i want answered Mike. How many years in a row can you hold someones salary below inflation before you think they finally deserve a raise? 14? 15?

anyone here think Lecce works harder than 4 ECE teachers?

Politicians all suck and are a cancer on society. The moment compensation changed from a minimal honorarium to high salary, citizens were screwed. That both drove up the cost by an order of magnitude and changed the pool that ran to one more concerned about themselves than citizens.

EAs got my autistic son through elementary school. He graduated high school on the honour roll.

Please give your daughter a huge thank you from me, my wife and son for all she does.

You cant honestly believe that. There is no such thing as everyone having a living wage. If minimum wage was $100 an hour, inflation would ensure they still couldnt afford a place to live. The bottom few percent of population cannot afford to live or eat, a group above them can barely afford rent and eat, etc. The hourly rates dont matter, the system will adapt and the percentages struggling/getting rich will be roughly unchanged.

My mother and several others used to do that for free, when she wasn't working to help us get by.
Yes, she used to work with the "problem" children that were mostly sitting out in the hall.
One threw a chair across the classroom and almost took someone's head off.
Then the unions found out that people were working for free, and that was the end of it for a few years.

Elon Musk makes boatloads of money. I deserve more.

If their wages are above competitive rates in the market, l guess you can hold off till they are corrected.

I don't see a union gig as a forever entitlement of wage protection.

You can hold someone below salary for as long as they are willing to stay there. Quit and get a better paying job. If you want to start at 8am? and leave at 4? get a couple weeks at Christmas, couple months in the summer, week in March , well there is a value in that. There is an occupational risk, nurses get kicked and beated up in the paediatic depts with the mental health kids, vet assistants get bitten, PSW in old folk homes get gropped. If you do it for the love of the job, "we do it for the kids"... oky doky. If its actually about the money, go drive a city bus , you'll get a pension.
