So I had a friend send my resume` to her supervisor to have a look. The supervisor wants to meet with me on Friday. He just said "meet" in the email.

What should I expect? How should I prepare myself? Shall I take this as an interview??

I really look forward to getting in this company, its a great place for growth and I don't want to F it up.

Thanks alot my GTAM family, I love you guys :D

You definitely shouldn't tell us anything whatsoever about the type of company this is or the position you're applying for...

I say, act like it's an interview.

Dress nice. Depending on the job and the company, maybe go for a tie, or a suit.

Do all the recon you can off their website. Try looking up the company, their parent company (http://www.sedar.com lists all Cdn publicly-traded companies), their products and service line, etc. Google some typical interview questions and come up with reasonable answers to them (use your resume, past experience as reference). Come up with minimum five good, solid questions about the job. (Maybe with some details from your friend as reference.)

I have a pretty corporate job so I usually prepare like this. Other than prepping answers and doing research, it's also important to be yourself and build some rapport with the interviewer. It sounds like you're psyched and want the job, but be natural too.

At worst, you'd be looking good and feeling really well-prepared for a casual chat.

This is an informal interview. They will probably take u to coffee and just sit and talk. Keep the tone casual and have fun (I.e. Don't treat it like a formal interview scenario). You should be prepared to ask informed questions about the company, the role, the person you are talking to, etc. This is information gathering for u as well as for them. If they genuinely like you they will recommend u or even hire u. Have fun and enjoy.

yes.
treat it like an interview.
be prepared the same way you would be for an interview.

nothing bad comes from being prepared.
have resumes. dress appropriately.
relax. chill.
listen to what they have to say and answer their questions accordingly.

Be yourself. Dress and act the way you would expect others to dress and act if you were running the show. If it doesn't work out it wasn't meant to be.

Treat it as an interview. First impressions are important no matter what. My friend told me to come by and fill out an app and I went in jeans and they gave me an interview on the spot. Felt like a total slob. If you don't want to wear a suit at least do business casual.

+1, informal meet and greet to make sure you can carry a conversation. Also to make sure you don't drool excessively when you speak, or leg hump in public etc. Also depends on the company/business.
you should do some homework for sure, check their website for products/locations/divisions

so what company is it?

Its a very large corporate company. There are some travels involved into the US and Canada, which is good for me cuz I get to rent bikes and tour the area. They also provide spending money if you are stuck away for more than 2days.

I was thinking of dressing business casual, say, a shirt and khakis?? Is a suit too much?

He had asked to meet either today or tomorrow. I prefer tomorrow, since I get more chance to prep myself.

Wear your reddest lipstick
I'll try not to do that :D

Cheers

Treat it as an interview.

Make sure you have done all the recon on the company possible. Also knowing about the position that you are trying to fill and any info on the person interviewing you helps. You said your resume was submitted by a friend. That means you have someone on the inside, use her to your advantage.

Dress the way that the person that you are meeting with would dress. If he wears a suit, then so should you (your friend should be able to help here too). Friday meetings make things more difficult. This is where you end up all over the place. I have been in Friday meetings were some people are in suits, with ties and cuff links, while others are in jeans and button down shirts. It is easier to predict what people will wear, Monday to Thursday.

When you are in an interview, you need to be able to hold up a conversation well and not show weakness (the silly questions like, what is your biggest weakness need to be answered with equally silly answers like, "sometimes I tend to work to hard" or "I am a bit of a perfectionist"). Also, studies have been done and have found the interviewers tend to think that the interview goes better when the interviewer talks about himself more than the interviewee talks. You should note this but it is a fine line. If you are too passive, you will be forgetable.

Good luck!

Good info, thanks.

I am on the website and it doesn't say much. Lots of articles about businesses, and so forth. I hope I am well prepared.

I will doing some auditing.

I hope this is going to be just a meeting, lol

To "meet" you is just saying its an informal interview. You will be critiqued and everything you say and do. Perception is always key. When he meets you he thinks you're not a good fit, you definately wont go through the formal interview process.

If it's a large corporate office, I can almost guarantee this is a meeting. As you're a personal recommendation, the potential hiring manager is doing your friend a favour by meeting with you to determine if you're suitable to put forward as a candidate. So don't **** it up. It's a rare opportunity in this day and age.

The supervisor has a position open, the supervisor has seen your resume and is interested in meeting with you. That's a good first step. However as they are meeting with you outside of formal channels, they probably have a desire to understand your experience a little more. Make sure you are able to speak to the experience you have on your resume.

Treat it as an informal interview as many have said. Research some typical interview questions, have your STAR (Situation,Task, Action, Result) answers ready. Don't psyche yourself out and be yourself. If you seem too much like "Jonny-Go-Getter" it can reek of desperation and won't help you. Be concise, friendly and forthcoming and you'll be fine.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Exactly! I got my current job because I went for an information session dressed up. It was on a friday and I was thanked by the HR rep for making an effort. She said not that many people bother and get eliminated early. They're gonna want to see what your personality is like and see what attitude you bring.

For me they didn't just want another corporate clone that said "yes" and we had a very long discussion on type of volunteer work I do and what my experiences were with that.

Edit: be sure to ask questions. Don't be idoitic questions such as: What is the pay like? Intelligent questions abotu the company or the products/services it offers.
