Anybody work for UPS here? How do you like it?

I got a call from them.

I work for fedex. The airport side. I like the company a lot. I enjoy my job for the most part.

Would you know what's the life of a courier like?

I've heard that FedEx is really good with employee relations, UPS not so much. But that's from a vague memory, probably not worth anything.

Our UPS guy spends his downtime sleeping in the parking lot. Mustn't be too difficult.

Apparently the only skills needed are the ability to navigate the big brown turdmobile and operate a gps unit.
The guy that does my area is about as smart as a bad fart, he keeps delivering me packages from 2 doors down because his gps tells him to i suppose. :dontknow:
I once asked him how hard his job was, all he has to do is match the address on the package with the one on the house.
Well, he got quite offended at that question, became an angry little monkey, chattered at me for a minute and sped off in a cloud of exhaust. :munky2: How rude.

So i say go for it rockerguy, sounds like the perfect gig for you, and i'm sure their couriers are overpaid based on their shipping rates.
At least you'll be able to track down your own smashed up packages when they F it all up. :lmao:

Seems like nobody worked for them. All speculations. I highly doubt private sector will pay that much if they don't work your arse off

Didn't Sonnythebull always say you preferred the brown?

You just mad because I like Rob Ford

I once had UPS try to deliver an empty padded envelope that was supposed to hold 2lbs worth of photo equipment.

Me - This is empty.
Him - What's that?
Me - *opens side of envelope that was cut by thief* Empty.
Him - Hmmm, can I get your signature here?
Me - :angry8:

Gotta meet certain quotas like 6 stops an hour. Like with everything else it get easier the longer you do it. FYI I'm sure the drivers at fedex don't use gps, maybe at first but doing the same route week in week out you'll know that ara like the back of your hand

Pros:
- Work without direct supervision, feel more of freedom, although not so real lol
--- work on your own pace mostly, although a very good performance is most likely expected
--- take breaks as you please, great for smokers or coffee addicts.
--- you can be on speakerphone or something for the entire day if you wish
- Know the city/areas you work in like the back of your hand, as mentioned above.
- Get to know the regular popo traps in areas, which is helpful for the leisure moto riding :)
- Visit bunch of (cool) places, otherwise you'd never visit
- Develop a characteristic connection to different areas/peoples of the city.
- See and learn what's out there
- The answer to question "where in the city do I actually wanna live?" quickly becomes obvious too
- Working outdoors
- Interaction with bunch of different people

Cons:
- City (traffic) gets really tiring. You lose motivation to driving/riding.
- HTA tickets; you increase your time on the road = increase the chance of insurance hike
- Parking tickets (buddy got a $250 ticket in TO for parking in firelane, which our company paid for, but you don't wanna get that twice in a week; hence the stress)
- Always in a rush. Not a job for you if your laidback.
- Painful learning process, especially if working in a dense area, like downtown
- You may have to face questions like "why is your mpg 1.x times worse than xyz?" (I know I did lol)
- Working outdoors
- Interaction with bunch of different people

I heard you might be gps tagged so you can't take extended breaks.

Also heard that you have to work 10-12hrs days. Can be physically demanding at times. How true is that?

Thanks guys!

I don't work in the industry and have no experience in it. BUT my buddies work for a contractor and they used to take their extended breaks and mess around a lot doing their own errands during their work hours. The boss put in GPS trackers in all the work trucks (of course they all moaned and ******* about the Nazi boss) but it turns out they were all messing around. Basically if they stopped somewhere away from the route, the phone would ring and ask why they're not on track to the next job.

They all had a good thing going with being able to do their own thing for a few minutes here and there, but a few of the useless idiots took advantage and then the entire team got hit with the restrictions.

Have you tried applying at Canada Post? I Hear they've got a good gig going for the mail carriers. I knew a few guys that were postal carriers, he loved the job more than anything in the world:

1. Wake up and go to get mail
2. Delivery mail
3. Get home and have lunch with wife and spend a nice day relaxing
4. Pick up kid from school
5. Have dinner with family
6. Go work at Beer store for fun

And repeat....

Didn't Canada post have huge loses lately? I recall reading something stating only 1/3 get home delivery and the rest of us use superboxes.

I dunno if CP has a huge future, predict a billion in loses this year....

I would lean towards the courier job first.

A classmate of mine that works for Canada Post said that they often deliver UPS's packages and vice versa.

I took their test. I F'ed it up. They give you about 20 questions in 5mins. I didn't know you're not supposed to finish it. I ended up guessing for the remaining questions. I won't consider the test easy, lots of time restraints

I was more on about the mailman and the door to door delivery. Not sure that will be necessary in the future.

Parcel delivery-absolutely. But they already have a few established competitors if they go that route
Plus being a crown corporation they are bound to inefficiencies!

So wait...you're NOT supposed to pass/finish the test? WTF....am I missing something here?
