It's Electric NOT Hydro

I get seriously peeved out when people mention Electricity as Hydro.

I needed to pay my Water & Sewage bill, I normally do online banking and they apparently labelled my "hydro" as "Electricity". Naturally, I gravitated towards Hydro while trying to pay for my Water & sewage.

I had a late payment bill coming in for the last month & I blatantly ignored it because I swore that I payed it.
Upon further investigation I realised that I paid my money to Electric rather than Water. <<huge facepalm>>

For those who don't understand the prefix "hydro" here is a brief description

hydro- or hydr-pref.1. a. Water: hydroelectric.
b. Liquid: hydrodynamics.

2. Hydrogen: hydrochloride.

where does the electricity come from? If it's water generated, it's Hydroelectric. Guess that's where Hydro comes in :)

Does your online accounts allow you to change the headings of the account name?
You could change hydro to elec or water&sewage to fecal.

I don't know about OP, but my online banking allows you to give 'Nicknames' to the bills your paying so you remember them easier.

Or can it be the simple fact that the company that controls the electricity is called Hydro?

Now pass me a tissue...

Yes, but you can't break it up and expect it to have the same meaning. Hydro is greek for water.

Do you call Hydroplaning, hydrodynamics & hydrophonics "hydro"??

BTW, Since you live in Scarboro, I'm sure your "electricity" comes from Nuclear :)

Like every good scarborough resident, I know where my electricity comes from.
An extension cord and the plug by my neighbours back deck!

Hydro around these parts is like saying Kleenex, or Double Double. Just the name associated with a common 'thing' that's become common jargon.

Right. What I meant to say. So I'll take a Kleenex if it's all you got.

Hey Roc !... < see how I did that.. ? I shortened your name!!

Hydro Electric Power Commission is the name of the company that started distributing Electricity.. their name got shortened to HYDRO .... or some called it HEPC .

So,, people paid their electricity bill at HYDRO... some local Hydro commissions collected the water bill tooo... so you would go to HYDRO to pay your electric and water bill.. . NOT WALMART.... they don't take money for electric bills...

then the word morphed into what ever today...

Ontario residents call the company HYDRO.. or the product now,, HYDRO... but USA call it Power Co,, or Light Co. or Power and Light CO. etc...

guys with lowered cars call them Hydro... that peeeves me.. cause they are hydra-lic lol not hydro-lic

They're technically correct more than you know it. The use of fluids can used to describe "hydro"

Ever heard of an engine "hydrolock"?

Anyway, I'm not gonna argue. I'm just trying to spare you the humiliation if you travel to other parts of the world and mention Hydro, when in fact you mean Electric/Power.

You maybe should have spared yourself the humiliation and not started this thread.

I always get "whats a lamp...its called a bulb!" from customers.

And an engine "hydrolock"....like when it sucks in water???
