Is this tire wear normal?

So I put a new set of Michelin pilot powers on the bike about 500 km ago. I took it pretty easy on them for a while getting used them before starting to push them a bit harder in the corners.

This is not what I expected the wear to look like. Is this normal? The edge looks almost shredded compared to the middle surface of the tire. Is this safe?
Thanks.

hugger or lower fairing might be touching the ehdge of tire.
Definitely not normal wear.

doesn't look normal....you must have felt or heard something while riding, for it to look like that.

Dammit. Ok there was a piece of metal which secures the rear brake that came loose and was scrubbing the side of the tire. Must have just came loose today, only rode for 30-40 minutes. Its secured out of the way again now.

So now my question is, is this tire safe to ride on? The edge is completely worn down. I didn't notice the difference today in any corners, although I'm not sure I'm leaning the bike over far enough to really be on this section of the tire. Could this just give out in a corner?

Thanks for the input.

Tire looks relatively new, and I know you are not going to like the response, BUT...... replace the tire.... it looks completely worn at the bonding point between the tread and the sidewall.... Do you really want to chance it while leaning over in a corner? Remember you only have two tires on your bike... it's not a car... I would also be concerned about the tire letting go at highway speeds.

I'd also be a bit concerend as to how parts of your rear break are "coming loose"

Youll be fine, I wear the edge of my tires in that spot right down to the cords from drifting and have no problems...If you do decide to change it, give me first dibbs on buying that one off you please!

Yea I'm kinda wondering that myself. I had the tires changed, and later that week I noticed there was a bolt missing from the right side of the rear fender, which also secures the rear brake line. I called the dealership where the changed the tires and told them they must have forgotten to replace the bolt. They were adamant however that they don't need to take that piece off to change the tire.
I'm not really sure how it could have unscrewed itself.....

You dont have to remove it, but alot of times I will to let the caliper hang away from the swingarm while the rear wheel is off having the tire swapped....Good chance they touched it, it doesnt normally just fall out on its own

Really? The issue to me seems that the sidewall is worn away, in addition to the top surface of the tire. The "Michelin Pilot...." text printed on the side is still visible, but the inch or half inch space above it is gone. When you wear down the edge, does the sidewall wear away too?

sounds like they owe you a new tire + install...

Like I said, for me its not an issue...So if it really bothers you sell me that tire for a little less then new and buy yourself a new one....I need a new rear tire and will be buying a new one soon anyways

It's a toss up I think....would you really want them servicing your bike again?! :confused1:

I'd certainly be back to them to complain directly though, either way...and see what they're willing to do. Let them know you're posting a review on a motorcycle forum ;)

Ok if you're really interested I'll let you know. I'm not sure I'm confident riding on it. To be honest though, I didn't feel the difference and didn't notice there was a problem until I got off the bike and looked at the tire. However I don't think riding hard enough to be that far over on the tires. But if you'd be happy with it and think its safe I would be more than happy to work something out with you.

I'm going to go back and talk to the people at the dealership in the next day or two. I'll see what they have to say and if they admit to screwing up.

No problem just let me know, I can also do the swap for you

I took the bike in last night, and the people at Honda said I definitely need a new tire. They said it's not safe to be riding on that one since the sidewall has been damaged.

So JohnnyP if you're STILL cool with that the tire is yours! I would feel more comfortable with a new one. I am still trying to make them pay for a new one although it may be a lost cause.

Let me know, that tire is PERFECT! for me...Being pre broken in and cheaper, I would prefer it over buying a new one...Im going to kill it anyways

Am I the only one wondering which dealer did the work?
