is this a good time of year (Fall) to buy a bike?

how about the insurance?
Assuming when buying now, i would need to get insurance now, and not ride it until March? April?
And also, I would need to store it over winter (maybe outdoors)

If you have to store it outdoors than no, don't do it, not worth it. You don't have to insure it over the winter. Just insure it in March-April when you start riding. The only thing you'll loose is if you get the UVIP when buying the bike that UVIP is only valid for 30 or 60 days (I can't remember) so you'll have to get another one from the ministry when registering your bike BUT those are only like $20 and I'm not even 100% sure you need it.

EDIT: Some dealerships will store the bike for you till spring free of charge so this might not even be an issue. Also, UVIP is only for used bikes.

generally, when it's around feb, march... are the bike prices going to be jacked up?

February-March is not that bad yet. Usually April-May is when things really pick up. Basically, whenever the first 20+ degrees weekend hits is when everyone starts running around like headless chickens looking for a bike and many of them will overpay. You DO NOT want to shop in that time frame. But yes, you are generally saving $500-1000 by buying now VS the spring. At least on the used front. I'm not sure about new as I have never bought new.

You forgot the biggest downside to buying later in the season..You have to sit thru the entire winter waiting to ride it. Its torture....

I don't see many bikes for sale in Feb-March. IMHO if the owner already decided to winterize the bike, they can wait another month, then sell the bike in late spring for higher price. The best time to buy a bike from private individuals is now - October-November. People who don't want to store + do winter maintenance, people who want to 'upgrade' after one season, etc etc. The best time to buy from dealers is probably going to be December and January bike shows.

I have this feeling right now :(

I bought my current bike in February. But yes, not that many listings in Febraury-March and you're not saving much, if any, money over buying in April-May but I find it a MUCH more relaxed shopping experience VS buying in April-May. You can look at a bike, think about it for a couple of days and make a decision. In April-May half the bikes are sold before you even get to see them if the price is right, and time to think about it? Forgitabout it! Plus, you have a little more room to bargain when the seller doesn't have 2 other guys coming in to look at the bike the same day.

Overall, it's just a much less stressful experience.

yup i have the same feeling i bought the bike on sunday and im going crazy wanting to ride it , but yes its a cheaper time to buy

Me too...bought this Sunday. But you know what?? I took the last couple of days shopping for mods. So I bought a few, installed one already and waiting for frame sliders. Now would be a good time to complete some modding, if you plan on doing any.

Nah, you have a whole winter for modding :)

you can usually get good prices anytime from now until early February with greater deals starting now.
Dealers will usually have good deals anywhere from December onwards to get rid of current inventory as they will be pusing the 2013s for next season.

the only draw back is if you are buying new and financing you will probably have to insure it right away.
If you buy cash, you dont have to insure it now but will have to store it and as mentioned before waiting to ride that thing is going to drive you freaking insane.

Most sellers will want to get rid of it now so they can jump on the deals that are out there now also.

good luck
