05 636 motor in my cart having trouble shifting to 2nd and only starts in neutral if i preload the shifter, is not shifting smoothly either I can feel something is rubbing. Now what. Is this an expensive fix?

could be many things, Ive fixed a trans at the track in 20 minutes simply because a bolt backed out on the shift star....Other cases its stripped gear dogs and cogs, bent shift forks, gouged up drum, etc etc...
The problem with your bike is you have to split the engine cases in half to even find out....Unless you can determine the problem from the symptoms alone, the only way to see the damage it to open your engine up
Here is the last 05/06 636 I did, in his case I had used parts and he brought me just the engine...$400 total fixed, his 2nd gear was slipping I changed 4 gears, and 2 shift forks.
Her you can see the rounded gear dogs causing the slippage

there is a guy in this tech section that just cooked his motor, buy it off him to fix your tranny.

Thanxs JohnnyP it's popping out of 2nd and now first. I know my hard crappy shifting caused it. I made a video I hope this narows down the problem.

Do you have a quick shifter set up on it? Would save your tranny a lot of wear in the future for sure

Ive seen it already, he brought it to my shop once to try and get it started. I didnt get to work on it though, as soon as it got here it felt at home and started on its own...
Take off your clutch basket and look at the shift star mechanism, theres a small chance its only related to that. However I have a 99% feeling that your gears dogs are rounded and your shift forks are bent, like the other 5 or so other 636's that I have rebuilt. Basically you need a trans rebuild

Hey Supersquid sorry I dont have your number but after seeing you the other day at our new shop location I looked around and I have a 2004 ZX6R engine here at my other shop with a spun crank bearing. It has a good transmission in it that can be used as a donor, if you are interested let me know....Bring the engine out of the cart $400 installed
