I'm always scanning the used motorcycle ads. It's just fun to see what is out there. Is it just me or are the prices for used bikes a little out of wack for what you get - especially for the older bikes? I get it - the right price is what the buyer is willing to pay -- of course. But 15-20 year old bikes with 1970s technology going for $5k+ I don't get it.

Scratching my head.....
 
In some cases it's owners attaching sentimental value on their asking price. I suspect many don't get sold until they become restoration projects at a much lower price

I bought my '03 EX500 for about $1200

Common, reliable, non-flashy.

I wasn't picky about the exact bike. I wanted a 300-600.

In 2017, there was peculiarly high number of Kawa 500s and Suzuki 500s.

1. Get a bike.
2. Get riding.
3. Maybe drop it a couple times getting good.
4. (Optional) Buy your dream bike for $10K.

I've fallen in love with my modest machine though. Done shopping for now.

Also toy prices are high this year. People have more time and many have more disposable income that they need to find a way to dispose of (I think dumping it in the market after the impending crash is a good plan, but judging by the home renovations and new toys in the neighbourhood, most people need to spend it).
 
Same with used Macs..some of the prices are insane but that said there is a supply issue as most wholesalers are out of stock for a while
 
It's called auction fever. Yes, way over-priced when they are asking way more then the original list price for a bike that has been beat on.
 
kijiji prices on bikes have always been nuts
this year is more so than normal

look at boats
any POS that floats and runs is fetching 5K

people are looking for family activity solutions
and have $$ to spend after the isolation and eating their own cooking

wonder how many boats are gonna be named CERB ?
 
Prices on used stuff always look too high to me... because I'm cheap.

I usually buy new because, well... "if a used (whatever) is going to cost X...
'Might as well get a new one that hasn't been phooked with.

That said... I am looking for a bargain on an ADV bike.... something I can fix up/farkle over the winter... it will.probably only see one big trip then get tossed off a cliff or hung on a wall so I'm not too fussy...
 
By next year all these trendies will be dumping their 'new' toys because they want to move on to something else. I see lots for sale right now though. Make an offer. All they can say is fck off.

Maybe the brown fur on the header pipe turned off a few prospective buyers.

The motors are pretty bulletproof but details details, certify?, service records? etc.
Barkbusters worth a fair coin too.

I'm the 2nd owner. No 'service records' because I've been doing my own maintenance on bikes since the 1970's <grin> (Except tires, which were new approximately 5k ago.) This bike has zero mechanical or cosmetic issues. I'm only selling to make room to rebuild my "Project Bike": 1984 Suzuki GS1150

Certify: As-is, but should pass with zero work. Was just certified about 5500km ago.

Agreed, depending on what you're looking for, either a V-Strom or KLR can be had for effectively pennies. Neither are "cool" so therefore don't have the price premium of bikes that would appeal to newer/casual riders.

I bought my '06 Strom in 2016 with 50k km for $3200, complete with aluminum hard cases/crash/bars/some other stuff. Sold it in 2018 with 80k km for $2600.

Nobody buys a bike with that description without knowing exactly why they are that price. Cafe racer hipster posing young professional or sentimental retiree looking to re-own a piece of their youth. Both have money and both have driven up the price for those.
